LC, Is this Panaeolus cinctulus mycelium?
    #14100576 - 03/10/11 08:49 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Three weeks ago, a pint jar was prepared with honey and spores from a wild Panaeolus cinctulus print. Jar has been in the dark, 70-80F and only stirred a couple of times during the three weeks. So does this look like Panaeolus cinctulus mycelium?

Various stages of agitation.

LC from a wild print is unlikely to work.
You'll need to shoot a test jar to know anything.
Nice pics though.

If you put spores from a wild print straight into a LC with out isolating the mycelium from contamination
I your HIGHLY likely to have contamination.

But here is a pic on Pan cyan Viets. To compare with.

But this looks contaminated.

Ya It is likely to produce con-tams from a wild print I know. But does what is growing look like Pan. Cin. mycelium?

It's impossible to tell what species of mushroom just by the mycelium alone. Especially in an LC.

The print was taken from a wild collected specimen and identified as Pan. Cin. on this site. I am just trying to figure out if what we see is mycelium..

You have to inoculate a test jar to determine weather or not it has contamination.
But that cloudy mess you have there looks contaminated to me. To be 100% certain shoot up a jar.

with my experiance with LC

cloudy to clear = a good sign  & clear to cloudy = contamination.

I'm not trying to find out if it is contaminated lol. I just want to know if whats growing on the bottom of the jar looks like pan mycelium. What ever it is, ther is alot of it, ofcourse it is going to make the solution cloudy.

If it's contaminated, then what does it matter?
Isolate, then inoculate.

I am aware of the proper procedures. However as this is a first time effort. I would just for now, like to know if that stuff is infact mycelium? Sheesh its a simple question

Ohhh you think the blob crap is mycelium?

That is Caramelized Honey from the PC process. that is not mycelium.

How would we know? You're right there and you can't tell.
Did it grow in the jar? Then it's something, isn't it?
So shoot a test jar. But cloudy = bacteria usually.

After the jar cooled there was no sediment. So it would appear that stuff grew in the jar. I figured someone might be able to tell by the pics. I cant tell, because im a noob lol. As I understand Pan. mycielium is very fine and delicate. This likely only makes it harder to tell by looking, than say with cubes.

Plus honey is amber, that stuff in there is mostly white.

I never used Honey I use LME/Dextrose, So I cannot say anything about Honey.
But I always get sediment that look EXACTLY like that on the bottom of my LC Jars after Pressure Cooking.
From caramelization of the sugars.

Well, perhaps it took awhile before the sugars in the honey to carmelize? But then again the fact that my jar went from amber to almost clear suggests that something is using nutrients. Guess I will just have wait until I can test a jar.

BTW the same print was used to make these jars.

It's something growing in a jar. Shoot a test jar.

Also, go get a pack of agar for $1.69, it eliminates all this guesswork.
