Eye Contact
    #14098266 - 03/10/11 02:28 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I always seem to notice that when I talk to people, sometimes they make very little eye contact. It makes me feel like they're uninterested in what I'm saying, but I think it might have to do with people's insecurities, and feeling uncomfortable making eye contact.

I sometimes feel uncomfortable when people NEVER break eye contact, but what's wrong with looking someone in the eyes when you talk to them??

your right on the money, its people's insecurities (unless your just a boring asshole :-P).

but really, i sometimes look people in the eyes extra intensely when i talk to them just cause i know it makes them uncomfortable and they look down/away etc.

in the animal world when one animal can't keep eye contact with another it is admitting submission, so just relish in your dominance.

I'm one of those people.

I like to concentrate and visualize what I'm saying.

When I'm looking into someone's eyes, I'm always thinking about what they're thinking and seeing-- kind of a self-conscious thing but not really even that-- and it all becomes a big mind fuck to me.

When I stare off into the distance, I feel that I can better think out what I want to say-- and better express myself.

:2cents: I figure a lot of people must think I'm weird, but that's how I roll. :winning:

I dunno I use eye contact pretty heavily

It's a strange power.

I try to return all eye contact given in full

Like someone said earlier, relishing my dominance haha

Ya i find this to be true also. Staring into someones eyes is making too much connection most of the time for casual conversation with random people. I got no problem doing it but i dont see why i should go out of my way. Besides i constant eye contact makes some people uncomfortable and i prefer to just be as courteous as possible go get w.e i need out of that person and be on to other things.

Eye contact leads to better conversations in my experience. It allows each person to better feel the others reactions... has anyone EVER had an awesome (in person) conversation where you weren't more or less directly staring into each others eyes? It adds a lot of emotional depth in my opinion.

Relishing in dominance! :awedance:

For example, yesterday I was riding the bus home and I struck up conversation with the couple sitting across from me. We actually had a pretty decent conversation, but after a few words, the guy would shift his eyes towards the ground, or over at his girlfriend, while I just stared at the top of his head. Hahah, I think looking away makes it more awkward for both parties

I've been trying to have better eye contact... Last time i was tripping I felt like the mushrooms were teaching me to look and focus and look deeper and deeper...
All the emotionally moving encounters I've had with super spiritual people were all characterized by the LOOK they gave me, like they were looking right through me to my soul. Eyes are the gateway to the soul, they say. So true. I also read somewhere that that's how Jesus and other healers heal people, by looking through them and recognizing their true, healthy, innermost being.
Eye contact is important!!!!
But I suck at it like most everyone else.

im all over the place so its hard for me to focus but im still listening. im always sure to remind the person and say "keep going, or sorry im still listening.." if u want my attention sometimes you have to grab both my shoulders and snap your fingers and say LOOK, THIS IS IMPORTANT! and i usually listen and retain what is said. i also get very mild Syncope's a lot, and sometimes mid conversation i just stop and zone. its kind of like a seizure but not as intense. just kind of randomly zone out for 15-20 min. ive always had them, hasnt been happening in the past week tho

i will look someone right in the eyes unless i feel like its making them uncomfortable. in which case i'll look away and act like im deeply contemplating what they say.

i notice that as soon as you look away people will start looking directly at you again.

eye contact rules but not a lot of people are good with it non-stop. when someone and i are looking directly into each others eyes for too long, it seems like they start to lose their train of thought. like they start to realize "Hey this dude has not stopped looking at me."

hehe. i love eye contact. theres something about the eyes

Eye contact is gay.

If they look away and bow slighlty it suggests they are being humble, gracious or nervous about holding your gaze.

If they look away and up then they are visualising what you talk about in their mind.

If they look away horizontally regularly you are boring them with your tone or content.

Of course there are exceptions but I can usually work it out by subtle cues like that.

There was a picture I saw a while ago that said something along the lines of "theres people that listing to you like they're in a car at a drive thru but they're actually intently listening to you"

I used to be like that, just look forward and listen, but now I tend to make I contact sometimes.  Not all the time though.

When I was younger I used to sit in front of a mirror and talk (dunno why) but it's helped me to learn to read lips.

Normally when I talk to someone I look them in the mouth, it's like playing a game or watching a movie with subtitles

I think its more annoying when people freak out about you not looking at them when they talk than whether or not you look at them. My mom does it quite a bit. Like.. my ears work just fine.. why do i also need to be staring at your face for you to be comfortable talking to me?
