Dunk em, then tip em over in that container of verm.

Perlite is what ya need, not a layer of verm.

Blinky1 said: Yes that's just a thin layer of Verm over the perlite and yes, cakes are "light". Is dunking actually dunking them underwater or simply letting them "sit" in water? Sorry for the dumb questions.
no such thing as a dumb question, my friend..
fill up a pot of cold water, put your cakes in it, then put a plate on top of them to keep the submerged.. take out, roll in vermiculite, and place back into your chamber..
i have to say, try taking out the layer of vermiculite over the perlite.. perlite works because of evaporation, and if the verm is there soaking up all of the moisture laden air from the perlite, then it wont keep the RH up.. just a suggestion..

yes submerge them in water. all the way. I put them in a large pot with a ceramic dinner plate or something somewhat heavy on top to weigh them down. I'd say dunk them for 18 to 24 hours.
also don't PACK the perlite into the chamber. just loosely put it in there. like 4 or 5 inches of it. surface area is the name of the game.

I have them soaking. I did notice some dark purple mold on the back of one of the cakes and I tossed it. Could that contaminate the whole group?

yop yop
it needs to be MOIST, as well.. i usually take the tub, fill it up with the perlite, fill it with water, and drain it well, so that no standing water is in the bottom.. then, just shake a bit to level the perlite out, and boom.. no issues..
i have also used Pumice many many times in place of perlite and it works as well.. perlite is the best choice, but some places only have it certain times of year, or only have HUGE fucking bags of it, but you can almost always find pumice.. prep it the same way..

whoooooaaa.. it may have just been bruising on the cakes, which happens when they get dry, touched, dropped, humped, etc. etc.
post a pic first next time.. ill be it was just bruising, and you tossed a perfectly good cake..

I should have taken a pic but it didn't look like bruising. It was dark and fluffy with some purple and went into the cake an inch or so. Thanks for all the help. Will post again if something does or doesn't happen with these.
