Give up and start over?
    #14096724 - 03/10/11 08:32 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I have several fully colonized cakes that have been in fruiting chamber several weeks now. Only one cake fruited a tiny bit. Otherwise, nothing. Humidity has been around 80 to 85. Temp has been around 75f. Fanning three or more times a day. indirect sunlight. At what point should I give up a toss them?

I'll post a pic but they look completely normal or according to photos I've seen.
Not sure what dunking is. I haven't been misting. I thought it was bad to get them wet?
Thanks for the comments.

dunking is exactly what it sounds like.. dunking the cake in water..

and for cakes, you are going to want to get your RH up to around 95.. 80's are too low..

I had the same problem with my PF tek awhile back. I couldn't keep my Rh above 85 even with a properly built SGFC. needless to say they pinned a small bit but never matured.. I had to scrap the whole thing because there was no bringing them back after awhile. It sucks, but at least ya learn!

yeah.. with a shotgun, if you have low RH, cover up some of the holes on the tub, and make sure your perlite is moist, but not sopping.. really, just perlite humidification should bring it up to 95+ easily..

edit: as long as your ambient RH where you live is not super duper dry.. I could see that getting in the way of achieving proper RH..

you could also try to put a humidifier in the same room as the shotgun to boost up the ambient RH..

Not so.  As we've known for years, taping holes in a properly built and elevated shotgun terrarium LOWERS humidity.

This is correct, but I've now fruited a shotgun terrarium many times in less than 10% humidity and inside was 99%.

I suspect the original poster has not built or set up the shotgun terrarium per the tek, or has failed to dunk and roll, as well as to mist as required.  To the original poster, pick up your cakes and you can easily tell by the weight if they've dried out or not.  If they have, soak in water for 24 hours and repeat the process.

"properly", being the operative word.. lol.. i was trying to hint at incorrect construction a lil..

the ambient RH wont have that big of an impact on SG's? just curious, but why is that?

just physics involving the density of the humid air inside the SGFC vs. the air outside.

I dont mean to sound dumb, but can you expound on that a little more? just saying its physics doesnt really explain much.. hahaha

im just curious as to why.. not a big deal.. i just search it up.. giggity

The holes are big enough to allow free exchange of air, but small enough to stop a breeze.
So the entire humidity escape happens at the holes, and it's relatively constant.
You'll need to mist more in dry climates, but the inside humidity will be fine.

are you using vermiculite for RH? or is that just a layer of verm over the perlite?

if im right, the verm is just going to hold in water, not let it evaporate.. not like perlite, anyway.. that could be your RH problem right there.. I have just never seen verm used for RH in a shotgun..

do your cakes feel light? like, lighter than they look like they should? if so, do like RR said, and dunk those badboys..

If they feel really stiff/brittle (like crackers) and are really light then yes. Dunk them, and you might want to consider rolling them in some verm, it helps retain moisture and provides a  nice little micro climate for the myc!

when I do PF I can't use a SGFC because my climate is too dry and I am not home enough throughout the day to mist them enough :frown:. However I have had success with putting some perlite in a monotub and putting the cakes in there oddly enough. just need to fan a bit more. Rh stays right up there!

Yes that's just a thin layer of Verm over the perlite and yes, cakes are "light". Is dunking actually dunking them underwater or simply letting them "sit" in water? Sorry for the dumb questions.
