Sunshine advanced ultra coir....ok to use?
    #14096039 - 03/10/11 01:04 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So like everyone suggests, I visited a local hydroponics store to seek for the hidden coco coir I have trouble finding locally and ended up buying a bag that is used for plant growing. It was called "sunshine ultra coir" coconut coir blend. The only other choice there was Atami (B'cuzz Products) CocoFiber from The Netherlands(im assuming for weed growing =D..), Pure fiber but I wanted Coir.

Now 1st of all, I was pretty exited to actually find the coir so I didnt really read the details of the bag until I got home.

Its 50% coir (I thought it was more =(...) and has peat. It also has some perlite, dolomite lime, mycorrhizae and organic wetting agent (whatever that is). Now Ive been reading that the peat moss is pretty acidic and would need adjusting but I encountered a PDF with details about this specific soil from the official site. The ph seems fine right?

pH – 6.00 – 7.00

Soluble salts – 1.5 – 2.5 mmhos/cm
Nitrate N – 25 – 60 ppm
Phosphorus – 1 – 10 ppm
Potassium – 150 – 450 ppm
Calcium – 30 – 60 ppm
Magnesium – 10 – 25 ppm
The actual PDF from SunshineAdvanced.com

I was planning on pasteurizing with some cow manure and verm so it gets a better blend and Still gonna add gypsum and spent coffee.

So do you guys think its a go? What about also adding a brick of coco husk with the coir/peat/poo/verm/coffee/gypsum mix to make it more cocoish?
Any input would be great, thanks!

I'd take that back and get coir.

coir is impossible for me to find unless I order it online. I only have coco husks available at pet stores.

The stuff at petsmart/petco is fine

You don't have any petsmart/petco around?

Also, if you REALLY can't find it locally, Amazon has it pretty cheap.

I have bought coco fiber and used it before, from petsmart but I know its different from coco coir because it comes form different parts of the coconut. I could only find this bag around town. As for the Netherlands bag, Idk all I saw on the bag was that it was form the Netherlands. its online too at Hydrofarm.com

The Eco Earth bag I posted is what everyone uses and is what people refer to as "coir"

yes fluffy coco fiber, or compressed, its all the same thing

compressed expands and turns fluffy upon adding water

coco husks are chunks and its real hard for the mycelium to consume and colonize it.

as long as its pure coco fiber, or coco coir, with no trich added, then yea

read the package it should say 100 percent coco fiber or 100 percent coco coir

No, coco-coir, pre-bagged from a hydroponics store for plant growth is fortified with trichoderma spores.  Trichoderma spores are beneficial to plant growth.

Trichoderma attacks would be invader contaminates to soil that would inhibit root growth.  Op, your safest bet is to get the lizard substrate coco-coir compressed into bricks, already displayed above.  Check your local pet stores or stores specializing in reptile sales for the correct coir.  If they don't have it, inquire who may and where you might be able to find some either locally or online.

If it's pre-bagged, it's treated with Trichoderma.  Case and point:  In the picture of the coir in the OP, the packaging clearly states "PREMIUM COCO COIR BLEND"  You wanna' guess what the "blend" is?

Search stores specializing in reptile sales for the symbiotic lizard substrate coir used in Damion5050's coir tek.  If the stores in your area specializing in reptile sales don't have it, inquire with them who may, and where you might be able to find some either locally or online.

Japanese coir.  100yen per brick.  Just don't use to cultivate psychedelic mushrooms, they are illegal over here, don't you know.

I can agree with this.  I think what it comes down to is where your located geographically.  I.E., I can't get pre-bagged coir anywhere where I'm located and if I could, I would be sure to read the labeling for added trichoderma.

IME, Even a brand name of coir named BEATSPEAT that's available to me, comes compressed, is treated with trichoderma, and isn't labeled that it's treated with trichoderma.  Found that one out the very hard way and at the numbers I was running, there was no way 100% of my grain spawn was contaminated.

The safest bet is to source lizard substrate, compressed, coco-coir as used in Damion5050's coir tek is the point I'm trying to make,

ok, i agree with ya on that one...at first i took it as you were saying i didn't know what i was talking about

and for the record, i still use bed-a-beast or eco earth comprssed bricks, simply because they're cheaper ;p

LMAO! you crack me up....
_______________________________________

As for the trich thing. I think he got a lil confused about which bag I was referring to. I was not asking about the ultra coir bag blend anymore, but about the coco fiber form the netherlands.

Idk what to do now!! haha. I can certainly buy fiber bricks but I didnt like the craters it left when I pulled my shrooms which is why I now search for "coir" but maybe I need a different brand of lizard bedding, like a finer one.

Thanks for your help guys, youve all been great help at helping decide.

Quote:

B'Cuzz Coco is the only coir product available through the hydroponics industry that undergoes a unique steaming and buffering process, resulting in an optimized, premium quality hydroponic growing medium.
Certified Organic.

I keep reading peat on the some of the descriptions. Problem is that the b'cuzz bag is in a completely different language so there is no way I can tell what really is in it and I dont thing the guy at the hydro store know 100% either.
Quote:

Coco substrate is light and stable and is one of the best mediums for providing oxygen to the roots of the growing plants. Atami coco substrates are internationally certified by RHP, a foundation whose aim is to optimize the quality of peat and coconut fiber products, raw growing materials, and soil products (improvers)

So Ill just drop the question and just try to find bricks for animals I guess.

Thanks again peeps!

I emailed the Atami B'cuzz company to ask, lol. We'll see if they say anything about it having other things aside from pure coco.

Im still considering the coco bag  because I think it would be better than buying 1-2 pound bricks for 5 bucks each at petsmart.

One more question...Is there a fluffy coco fiber/coir bulk tek?
Or would I just measure out 2 gallons worth of it as if I hydrated a brick?

Treat fluffy coir the same as coir bricks that you hydrated yourself.  Be sure the coir out of the bag's at field capacity and pasteurize it properly since it's already broken up for you.  Measure the coir as if it were a brick that you hydrated.

Petsmart is a rip-off on coco-coir.  The one in my neighborhood also only has the single brick for 5 bucks.  Do you have a Petco in your area?  They carry the 3  packs of the Eco-Earth brand coco-coir for 10 bux a piece.

Other then that, visit http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ and click on the reptile supplies selection.  See if they'll deliver to you.  They have the Eco-Earth coco-coir brand for 6.99 a three pack.

I bought both of Eco Earth's 3 brick pack and the big bag of loose coco fiber from Petco . The bag definitely looks ground up nicely with barely any stringyness to it but the bricks seem like a better buy. Both priced the same, but we'll see which performs better. So Im going to try both in bulk simultaneously and Ill let you guys know how they both do.

Thanks again guys! great help!
