Well, I'm not going to drive three hours away to a show not even having tickets. What scalper would sell tickets less than what he bought them for?

One who's desperate to just get inside to the show...
I mean, a regular guy drives to the show late. Gets there while the opening act is probably coming on. Rushes inside to see if the opening act is any good, get a beer, get food, smoke a bowl, etc.
I wouldn't drive 3 hours away without tickets either though.

Any scalper that doesn't want to lose all of his money?
Seriously, do you not understand that?
A scalper buys tickets hoping to sell them.
The show/game/event is about to start.
He hasn't sold them.
Do you think he's going to keep them?

No, but that's just counterproductive selling tickets less than what you bought them for. It cuts into any profit you made off the tickets you did sell.
I would much rather buy my tickets online and pay a $7 service charge. Besides, every event I've been to in the past two or three years require an ID and the credit card you bought the tickets with. It's impossible to just buy the tickets from scalpers at the events I attend.

When will ticketmaster and artists and venues all catch on? It makes me wonder whether they are the same people running the scalping sites. If you are selling out shows, raise the ticket price! That money should go to the artists not to ticket scalpers

Lol, maybe you have no problem getting Chicago Cubs tickets from your friendly neighborhood scalper at less than face value, but try that when a medium to large-following band rolls through town and plays a medium sized or smaller venue. These fuckers are organized, work fast, have supervisors with clipboards and shit and are all black, for whatever that's worth.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure the secondary market for Cubs tickets is greater than that of Phish, or whatever shitty band you are following around.
They are probably the most in-demand ticket in sports, in one of the biggest markets in the world, and one of the smallest stadiums.
All of the tickets for the entire season commonly sell out within minutes of going on sale.
I just don't think people know how to handle scalpers correctly.

Oh bullshit. How many seats are there in a typical sports stadium? Wrigley field has over 40,000. And how often do you think pedestrian middle America goes "Oh, we have to take little Johnny to his skin flute recital, guess we'll have to miss the Cubs game tonight, oh well, we can go next week.
Compare that to when A Perfect Circle comes to town once in ten years and plays a medium-small venue. Why don't you share how you would go about "handling scalpers correctly" to obtain less than face value tickets? Let me guess, you'd wait until the show started then get your ticket at 50% discount from Blacky McScalpsalot? Not gonna happen dude.

Compare the number of A Perfect Circle fans to the number of Cubs fans.
I mean, seriously.
Do you think more people like that crap band than the freaking Cubs?
Really?
I would expect that there are exponentially more people wanting to see said Cubs game than the concert, leading to exponentially higher demand for tickets.

If the number of Cubs fans vs the number of A Perfect Circle fans was the only factor you might have a case.
How many Cubs games happen every single year, year after year? 50? 100? And what, half of those or more are all in Chicago? I don't know because baseball is fucking stupid. And what's the capacity of Wrigley field? I know that - over 40,000.
Now let's consider the Tool show I wanted to see a few years back when they rolled through town for one night for the first time in years and played a venue that seats about 2,000 people. What do you think was more in demand, that Tool show or some fucking Cubs game. Gee.
