Jesus fucking christ, Walker just stripped workers of their collective bargaining rights
    #14094355 - 03/09/11 07:05 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/wis-gop-strips-public-865928.html

They did it by removing the fiscal policies which made it so they didn't need the 14 Dems to vote on it.

What the fuck

Classic Pris reply I see above . . . go go fascism, kill that big boogeyman organized labor!

Meanwhile back on Earth . . . They agreed to the cuts as asked. The pension fund is over 99 percent solvent. Liar Gov Walker is only serving the Koch brothers. This is about busting unions, nothing more. Well, a little more - he also needs to make sure the Koch bros get a stab at Wisconsin utilities in a no-bid fashion, price to be set by the Gov.

Oh and hopefully they'll be able to steal the pension money. That is deferred salary the teachers EARNED under agreement. I am sure fascist nutjobs here and elsewhere think it is OK to steal that money from the teachers though right? Maybe they can just transfer it directly to the Koch brothers.

Yeah, let's cut the taxes on the rich, and use the teachers' money to pay for it.  Our kids don't really matter that much anyway.

On a similar note, you hear about the girl who was killed in Florida last week by her foster parents, and just a week later we're cutting 1800 DCF jobs here?

Let us not forget, Gov Walker punched a hole in the budget as soon as he took office with several hundred million in giveaways to corporate interest. This in a state where most corps pay ZERO tax, and the corporate tax climate is already pretty good.

By giving away more to big concerns, while squeezing the working man, Gov Walker is facilitating a direct transfer of wealth from working people to powerful interests and rich people. THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. This is the essence of the agenda the nutjobs in congress are pushing too, why do you think keeping tax rates for the top tier was so important? You are an idiot if you think it was going to affect job creation, and also the republitard talking points about damage to small business on this issue are demonstrably false; in fact most are outright lies.

The media won't report any of this, because they are owned by the very interests destroying this country for a few more dollars. I am fucking sick of it.

Please what a bunch of fucking Bullshit pris.
You aren't being "held hostage" by school teachers or unions. If it weren't for unions, workers wouldn't get paid shit. And I don't believe for a fucking second that you would give them a decent wage if you had the choice.

That 137mil def sure isn't being helped by giving corporations a free ride. How about taxing the people who actually have money instead of taxing people who don't have shit?

Walker is clearly in this to make money from the Kochs, how blind are you?

What are you talking about?  Do you know what tenure is?

"Tenure commonly refers to life tenure in a job and specifically to a senior academic's contractual right not to have his or her position terminated without just cause."

Being a shitty teacher would definitely be considered just cause.

how many times was DFCS out there checking on the kid, it's certainly not
the first time this has happened, I've seen how they operate and after
seeing it, DFCS needs to be abolished

one girl that lived next to my brother neglected and abused her kids, she
had 2 and was expecting a 3rd, all welfare kids, all her neighbors were
calling DFCS about it, they'd call and allow her to clean up her mess for
a few days prior to a visit, 3 times the cops were called to her place
because of her bipolar rages, all 3 times the cops called DFCS and the
kids were still never removed from the home... the system is fucked,
abolish it

For anything less than a college professor, not much.

The unions are too strong to allow the massive education overhauls that we need.

I fail to see how completely taking away their right to even be at the table is justified.

Even if your unfounded claim is correct, why is it necessary to completely strip them of the right to even bargain?

What the fuck?  I don't think you've thought that through.  At least there's some system in place to help protect against abuse.  Sure, it's broken, but abolishing it would only make things far worse.  We need reform.

Private school is an indicator of economic status, it could just be that their better performance is indicative of that instead.

and by what arbitrary definition shall 'just cause' be determined as, you
obviously havent see how litigious the unions are when it comes to 'just

Like most threads of any real importance here, it is pretty much a waste of time. You can either preach to the choir, or listen to ridiculous arguments and constant redirection from the facts.

Now don't go bringing reason into this debate, no siree. Don't stop Pris from deriving an unproven conclusion from some unrelated issue, which even if proven would still signify NOTHING to anyone with a brain. Bullshit redirection is all that was

Private schools have much smaller class sizes, so that the teachers can have more individual time with students.  The teachers have a lot less stress, a lot fewer papers to grade, etc.

But recently the private school salaries have risen markedly.  According to the The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, private school and public school teachers have very similar average salaries.

Pris, can you explain to me why the states without collective bargaining rights have the worst test scores and that the states that do have much better scores? If unions are so bad and don't do anything for schools, why is it that there is clearly a strong correlation?

Those corporations that wouldn't be in Wisco otherwise?  Corporate tax breaks are typically used to incentivize corporations to come to the area, bringing JOBS that would have otherwise been absent.

I'm not familiar with Wisco, so i dont know if thats the case for these tax breaks you speak of - but oftentimes it is.

around here the average class size in public school is 28 kids, in private
schools it's typically around 24, the pay in the local schools for
teachers in public schools averages $50k/yr, the high side is $75k and the
low side is $33k (excluding certain positions like para pro) the
administrators in the school, my kids principal in fact is pulling $105k/yr
with administrator positions averaging around $90k and all they really do
in public schools is teach them to pass standardized testing so they can
keep their accreditation and their budgets

the county made all the salaries public record and posted them online,
that's how I learned this info and I know a few teachers at one of the
private schools near me, a really nice place

Pris, can you explain to me why the states without collective bargaining rights have the worst test scores and that the states that do have much better scores? If unions are so bad and don't do anything for schools, why is it that there is clearly a strong correlation?

why yes, it's because the economist has a liberal bias

They should bargain and be compensated according to their abilities and merit.

Senator Chris Larson
Quote:

SEN. LARSON: I think a lot of what they’ve done is on the borderline of what is legal. It’s definitely questionable democracy. What they’ve done is an embarrassment to our country and our state. They’ve shut down the people is what they’ve done.

I can’t tell you how heartbroken I am that they would deliver this death-blow to the people at this time where we’re trying to ban together to get through this.

I’m actually in my car right now speeding towards Madison trying to get there to do something, anything. It’s already passed. I’ve been driving for the last hour since I heard news that this is what they were going to do. They didn’t give us a chance. They didn’t give the public a chance to do anything about it.

This is case where every single one of those Republicans, all 19, just signed their political obituaries. This is it.

They just thumbed their nose at the people by shutting down the public debate 3 weeks ago, they shut it down after 17.5 hours, they shut down the legislative hotline because they got sick of people talking about this.

Then they shut down the Capitol and locked everybody out.

Then they shut down the debate on the assembly floor and jammed this through in the middle of the night before people had finished speaking about it.

Then they took over our offices. Then this, with no notice whatsoever.

And this, in the days before, where under the guise they were looking to compromise, looking to negotiate, and instead they pulled this. It’s an embarrassment to what our country is and I think that these recalls just got a new wave of energy from everyone in our state.

http://blogs.wsj.com/independentstreet/2008/08/19/study-lots-of-small-companies-not-paying-income-taxes/

Here's another "liberal" website talking about how many SMALL businesses don't pay any income tax either (article from 2008).

Quote:

A Government Accountability Office study, which relied on corporate income tax data from the Internal Revenue Service, found that 72% of all foreign corporations and 55% of all U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes in at least one year between 1998 and 2005. During that same time period, 57% of foreign corporations and 42% of U.S. corporations paid no federal income taxes for two or more years, the GAO found.

no but you're certainly going to post the slanty bits, seems that if a
company makes no money in the US they dont pay US taxes, Hmmmm, seems some
are eligible for bailout funds as well even though they made billions overseas

http://money.cnn.com/2010/04/16/news/companies/ge_7000_tax_returns/
Quote:

GE had plenty of earnings last year -- just not in the United States. For tax purposes, the company's U.S. operations lost $408 million, while its international businesses netted a $10.8 billion profit.

GE isn't the only "Top 5" company on this year's Fortune 500 list that owed no income taxes. Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), which suffered major losses in 2009, included a tax benefit of $1.9 billion in its annual profit.

"That's one way of escaping taxes," said Scott Hodge, president of the Tax Foundation. "Companies get to deduct their losses, so if there's no earnings, then they pay no income tax."

But GE isn't exactly escaping all tax-related pain: The company paid almost $23 billion in taxes to governments around the world from 2000 to 2009, Eisele said.

Corporations purposefully set up tax shelters and overseas divisions in countries with lower corporate tax rates for the purposes of avoiding paying taxes in the US.

I don't see how you can deny the fuckeduped-ness of GE being owed a billion dollars by the government rather than paying any taxes. They have operations in this country, why shouldn't they pay any taxes?

For the life of me, I will never understand why so many middle/lower class people defend the super rich with all their might. Is it because you think you might have a shot at becoming a billionaire someday? Keep dreaming, pris.

absolutely they do and it's all perfectly legal under the tax code because
the way it works, if you dont earn anything in the US you have no tax
liability, the same goes for individuals... if you're not liking the
system then do all you can to change it but dont bitch when it back fires
and bites you in the ass

Quote:

while I dont believe in getting more back than is paid in, it also happens
on the individual level as well, so this isnt just for the corporations,
it also works for us, in fact the vast majority of us receive more back in
taxes than we paid in through our checks and instead of paying a little in
taxes, we pay no taxes and still get a little extra, instead of $800 like
you and I would recieve, they get billions, sure it's not fair but hey,
I'm not dealing with billions in revenues on my personal income

if a business hasnt made a profit in their US operations should they be
required to pay, if you dont make anything this year, should you be
required to pay anyway?
