Do you like Dr. Dre's single "Kush"?
    #14093934 - 03/09/11 05:52 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've found that a lot of people who don't even like rap enjoy this song. Not sure why. For me, a hip hop fan, it's pretty good, though not at all close to Dre's best.

Its good, I listen pretty much to Dubstep, Rap, and other random stuff but yeah the songs good.  Definitely not one of Dre's best.  Not bad though, and I can see how it appeals to many people for one its a popular single.  Two, its about weed and I don't know many people under the age of 30 who DONT smoke.  So smokers will like this song (its Dre and Snoop can't really go wrong musicwise) just because its about weed.  Three, it has a good beat and I think a lot of people who normally don't like rap will give it more of a "chance" if it has a nice beat.

Also, the part when its "Hold up, wait a minute let me put some kush up in it" sounds poppy, if you know what I mean.  This song is good IMO, but it is a single and it really seems like its trying to reach out to those non-rap listening weed smoking types, and I do think it is good but doesn't do Dre and his roots justice.  Someone will hear a song like this, than go home and download all of Dre's stuff only to not like him and get offended.

One of my favorites.  I remember listening to this as a kid and loving every second of it.  Damn dude nostalgia.

AN WE AINT ASKIN FO SHIT WE TAKIN IT

Listening to this for the first time in literal YEARS.  I can't prevent the smile on my face.

Dres verse is pretty mediocre and the beat isnt something id remember. on the other hand snoop pulls out some shit I havent heard in a minute. Good delivery...I dug it all in all but its nothing special.

That other song with eminiem and dre I need a doctor or whatever is hella stupid but dres verse is sick as fuck.

I thought the beat was uninspired and boring, the autotune shit at the beginning was dumb... then I turned it off.

And we'll just have to disagree on that ^

The hook in Kush is, admittedly, hella tight.

It's just the kind of chorus that is so infectious it worms into your head even if you try not to like it.

Yeah.  If you're into music and what not (know a bit about music in general or Dre or his older stuff) this song is meh.  But if otherwise you can see how it would be so popular.

Nothin but a g thang bayyyybay.  Shit yeah.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! that sound at the beginning.  That high-pitched thing.  I fucking LOVE it.  I have no idea what it is or what makes it really, but I love that sound.  Whenever I hear the song immediately gets +1 and makes me actually think of my Dre chronic days.

lol... I love the "OG is the only G" mentality of the hip hop crowd.

I, for one, was a hip hop fan since the early 80's, including NWA and dre's old stuff etc....

I still like the new song. Is it inferior or superior to his previous work?  Yes, and yes, depending on how you want to judge it.

I don't think dre has the "fresh ideas" that he once had, in terms of being able to write controversial rhymes that people will talk about (I could be wrong there.) That's what eminem is there for. or was. whatever

On the other hand, i think dre has only gotten better as a producer and musician.

Though the beats/production on the Chronic may likely never be quite be replicated in a hip hop album. That does have "something" that a lot else doesn't.

This, sir, fits neither criteria.

"Classic" is like sugarhill. Or Run DMC or the fat boys or some shit. Curtis Blow. UTFO.

(oh shit, I'm giving away my age. haha)

Even THE FRESH PRINCE was "classic" old school rap.

Will Smith, regardless of how jiggy the man has gotten, is not.

On the other hand, Kool Moe Dee (sp?) wrote a classic rap song by the same name. Wow, I almost forgot the extent of my useless trivia.

To further qualify my previous statement (yeah, I'm that bored and OCD)... I posit that Will Smith came along during the "neo-classical" or "pre-modern" rap era.

The non-violent alternative to shit like Biggie Smalls. (who may be OG, but is not "old school" to most of us over 18)

Teenage will smith, however, was definitely a classical period rapper as The Fresh Prince.

Interesting... never really considered this, but I guess this is early evidence that will smith was into film. heh

But this was like my fucking JAM when I was about 5.

Thanks. Glad it's appreciated.

Rap is actually not my genre of choice anymore, but it is the first music I really got into (about 25 years ago, when I was like 5. haha)  so I have been following the evolution of hip hop for a while.

Interesting stuff.
