Fruiting chamber for hay logs
    #14092693 - 03/09/11 01:51 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi I'm quite new to this.
I have two hay logs colonizing quite well at the moment , and I'll need to put them in some sort of fruiting chamber soon.
I bought a 24-litre plastic tub with a lid , threw in some perlite wchich covers around an inch of wet perlite , drilled 6 holes on the sides , covered them with filters, and , problem is...

I dont see too much humidity.

The tub is sitting flat on the ground, the holes are cut near the bottom and the top of the container. only the walls seem slightly wet and the lid is completely dry. Cant check the humidity % due to no hygrometer but im concerned about how dry it is inside there.

Are the holes too small? Should the fc be elevated from the ground? Should i drill more holes and should i cover them with filters ?

I guess ill have to drill LOTS of holes and leave them uncovered, add some more perlite, and slightly elevate the fc. Will that solve the problem?

(all this is a work of fiction of course , i dont grow any illegal substances in my household)

ok here goes.
First, did you do hay instead of some cereal grain straw?
Second, if you want to fruit said log I'd at least make a sgfc "shotgun fruiting chamber" out of your tub. The lack of holes under your perlite  means you are only getting moisture from the exposed top surface.
So yes drill 1/4in holes every 2 in on all surfaces get it elevated, and holes uncovered, and providing everything else is good then you should be all set.
goodluck.

Humidity can't be seen.

Straw is what you're supposed to use.  Hay will work, but it needs to be sterilized and kept sterile until fully colonized.

Since you're growing outdoors, simply find a shady spot that you can hit with a lawn sprinkler a time or two daily and fruit it that way with no chamber.

I used hay because it was much easier to obtain and I felt like experimenting  the log is doing well and colonizing quite quickly, i'cant really do it outdoors yet because it was snowing just a few days ago where I'm at, so I'll just stick with the holes and elevation, and see how it work's out.
One more thing , if the humidity is right will i see condensation on the walls? Whats the best way to determine if its ok without a hygrometer?
