Wheat Berries,Rye Berries or Wbs
    #14091644 - 03/09/11 10:09 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I have been working with Wbs now for almost 2 years. Is the only thing I can get locally. The other 2 I would have to order online and of course with shipping they would be considerably more expensive. Is it more personal preference and availability or would switching to one of the others show a considerable increase in yield? I'm about to order a bunch of stuff and figured I would get the general consensus, Maybe switch it up.

Rye is better, but not good enough to pay shipping.
If you have used WBS for two years, there's no reason to change.

But I call BS on the idea you can't find rye locally. Where in the world are you?

Out in the sticks, town of like 1500 with a 7-11 and a dollar store. I can drive 30 mins and have access to a few dif places. Maybe I'm just confused on exactly what rye to get. Is rye grass seed the same as rye berries? Just any type of rye will work? Even looking at the rye grass seed though I didn't see any without a fungicide in it.

What you want:

Rye Berries - Rye Kernels
Wheat Berries - Wheat Kernels

I had to drive over an hour to find a place that stocked any at a
decent price, but if you look hard enough I am sure you can find
something.

I called 8 separate places before I found anything.

Rye goes by a few names. I couldn't find it when mentioning rye berries, but when I finally said winter rye things started moving in the right direction.

The rye seed is different, but still usable.

WBS is the only spawn I will ever use due to availability and cost. Only advice I have to give in WBS selection is always avoid birdseed with cracked corn. It still works, it just makes everything all sticky. I don't see any advantage in using Rye once you become accustomed to properly hydrating WBS.

Rye comes cleaner(less rinsing)
dries faster
don't have to look around the city for who has the non corn wbs
has more nutrients than wbs

and once you find a good source is only marginaly more expensive than wbs, in the end the ease of usability and it's nutritional benefits are worth it.

I've just been using super cheap birdseed..good percentage of it is corn. It is a reall bitch busting the spawn up in the jars,if prep is also easier with rye then def worth a try.
I'll call some places then and ask about winter rye. If I can't find it I'll go ahead and order some. 11.95 for 50lbs is cheapest I've found online. I imagine I'll pay atleast double that for shipping then. Found some coir for $13 for 10 pounds and coarse verm 16.50 for 4 cu feet.

Check health food stores (Whole Foods, Earth fare, etc.) for the bulk, serve-yourself bins. They almost always have rye berries or winter wheat berries, at least around my neck of the woods. Or if you're west of the Mississippi, check out Azure Standard. You can set up a free delivery to one of hundreds (thousands?) of drop points, where you can pick it up.

It can get a bit more pricey than the WBS, but after switching to rye from bird seed a while ago, I can surely say I won't go back if I have the choice.

Got a feed store? Ask for hard rye or winter rye. 40 lbs for like $12.99.

hell if you are ordering, You should order/find/ trade for horse/cow poo- IMO way better than Coir- And usually if you find a source, out in that one horse town they will prolly let you have all you want. Some people may even pay you to take it. just make sure it doesnt have any wood chips in it.

I know someone that knows someone with horses. I do plan to gather a stockpile once it warms up a bit. Planned to try professor p's sub mix with the poo and coir. I can get coir close by here at 6.99 for 1.25 pound brick  I'll get it there I suppose untill I try the poo with and without. Then order bulk if I want to use it.

Can you get verm?
Cup for cup, cakes outproduce any other material. If it's such a hassle to get supplies, get the most value out of what you have.

also, cased grains do better than you might think.

Yeah I can get small bags of verm. I can't go back to cakes though :/ I really just wondered if rye was worth switching to. Sounds like it def is worth giving a try. Even ording some stuff I would only be looking at a few hundred. Would be enough material to keep my 6qt trays in constant rotation for quite some time.

I noticed that Mcdude mentioned coarse verm. When I picked up my verm, I had ordered med., and didn't notice that it was coarse until I got home. I've been running it thru a blender. Am I wasting my time doing this?,
It takes a while to do this.
Any help

I've been reading conflicting things recently. On the AMU page I think I have seen the use of coarse verm mentioned. Seen it said to double up on the amount of verm in Damions 50/50 coir tek if using fine verm. Prof P also spoke of coarse verm in his substrate. I'm guessing maybe for pf tek the fine is what you want. When moving into larger bulk substrates the coarse is better.....what I've gathered over the last few days anyway.

I use nothing but coarse verm, but I grow nothing but bulk.

If we were referring to cakes we would want to use a medium grade.

If you get the true fine grade verm it is like beach sand.

What some people refer to as fine grade is actually medium grade.

I don't know about using a blender. I've never tried but would imagine it would not be very effective

The following is how the three different types should look

Fine

Medium

Coarse

The latter is the better for what I do.

...I can get coir close by here at 6.99 for 1.25 pound brick ...

ouch that does suck the big balls. I get my bricks for 1.99.  At 6.99 I would be out searching for manure too.

Also for  the sake of a post for those not in the know, whole foods stores are the worst place to buy rye. When your talking about anything over 20 lbs (so 20 jars, not that much) you will be throwing money away.

I did for a while and it sucked. Food stores, I have found, are the only ones that use the term rye berries. Use winter rye or as doc suggested hard rye at the feed store.

50 bucks for 50 lbs= food stores
12-20 bucks for 56lbs= at the livestock feed store in your area.

I am also a fan of the coarse verm in my mixes.

Glad you found such a cheap source of rye McDude..I'm jealous, you're paying a few bucks less than me.
