A fire is one of the greatest survival tools. Not only does it provide heat and light and comfort but it can mean life or death in certain conditions.
I believe every camper/hiker/bushwacker/survivalist/outdoorsman should carry one of these:
Firesteel - http://www.lightmyfireusa.com/firesteel.html http://firesteel.com/

A small rod of Ferrocerium and composite metals weighing mere ounces, that can light thousands upon thousands of fires with a flick of the wrist throwing molten hot 3000c sparks in just about any condition even when wet. it will set fire to even wet tinder It takes no force or special finesse to operate, you could do it with giant gloves on. just take the piece of metal attached to the rod and scrape it against for a shower of sparks. Ever try to start a fire in a rainstorm with some matches? This will
Just a plug for a failsafe and foolproof fire-starting tool that I think everyone should carry in their survival kit Warning: After using one of these to light several fires, you will not look at matches or lighters the same again.

Yes, these are _the bomb_. Easiest, most fail-safe way to quickly start a fire. Cheap as well

That is intended for igniting gas, the sparks are not robust enough to be a reliable fire starter of solid materials in my opinion, especially in the rain. Firesteels are cheap, reliable and effective. You might as well get one if you can... a fire can be the difference between life and death in a number of different scenarios.

That would work in a pinch, you could just fill it with some tinder or flip it upside down to put down the sparks. But it's way too bulky for normal use and not nearly as efficient. With a firesteel you can get literally THOUSANDS of fires with very little effort, And like I mentioned... even when soaking wet. This thing will still produce a shower of molten sparks in a downpour. I bought one 4 years ago and I've been using it and have barely put a dent it. It's a scout model, supposed to be good for 12,000 strikes, I've probably used it 300 times.
A good basic firesteel costs like $5-10, worth its weight in gold x100 IMO.
Lighters fail/run out of fuel, matches are super delicate, this thing is the lamborghini of fire starters. When other means fail this will never let you down.

I've been using a magnesium block since I was a kid. I still use the same one I got in the boy scouts over 25 years ago! I like the magnesium because I can shave as much as I want to use depending on conditions. Usually just the flint will light nice dry tinder, a few magnesium shavings for stubborn conditions, while a nice little pile of magnesium filings will ignite anything.
Nothing more important then a foolproof way to start a fire!

Magnesium blocks are great too They'll never let ya down either. I guess they have the added advantage of having the built-in super tinder. burning magnesium shavings also burns at about the same temp of the firesteels (~3,100c)

Firesteels are great.
Another failsafe fire starter is wind and waterproof matches. They're hard to find sometimes but well worth getting.

Dipped in wax too for waterproofing!
