Someone asked how fast LC colonized the other day...
    #14090614 - 03/09/11 01:36 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

When i posted about my suspect jar and quickly got shot down thats its healthy myc. Someone asked how fast my WBS was colonizing with an LC solution. These pics are of three separate jars and its currently on day three.

And the jar i inoculated last week Thursday.

Question i want to spawn it, my past mixture was simply the spawn + verm. Would i notice a significant difference if i mix it with coir+verm and spawn?

Yes. More sub = larger yeilds.

How many cc did you use for those jars? Yes, spawn  to coir+verm for better performances. The substrate will be more nutritious and will have a better texture.

I used about 6cc, so about 2cc per jar perhaps a little bit more.

Looks like you got a super fast colonizer.
I see a weird pinkish color in the last picture though. Is it the camera perhaps? 2 cc and you got full colonization after only 6 days? Are those quart jars?

Judging by the looks of things you prepped your grains correctly and used a thick LC.

Proper hydration of the grains and a really thick liquid culture are the key to rapid colonization.

Make sure they are consolidated though. I have went to spawn jars that took 5 days to colonize and found that the center hadn't even been touched. So I essentially dropped raw grain into a tub,.

It worked out ok in my case but I sure as hell never did that again and wouldn't recommend it for others,.

2 seconds of laziness can lead to 2 days of ass busting cleaning if the greenageness shows its ugly head.

Yeah its just the camera angle i had some light pouring into my living room, and its a crappy cell phone camera. They are 500ml jars (not sure on the american volume conversion

This is a pic of my LC

Not the best pic i might add.

Yeah prep i basically let the seed sit for over 36 hours, then wash it a few times to get that funky smell off. Then simmer it for an hour, then rinse again, then let it sit on cookie paper for about 3 hours, then PC for just over an hour. My seed bursts are down to a minimal.

For a better pic try resting the jar on the counter, then set the timer and put the cell phone/camera on the counter too during the shot. If they are both absent of the vibrations your hands couse the pic will come out much more clear

Yeah i usually take it like that with the other pics, just needed more light for anything to be actually visible

Thanks, just for interest sake my previous WBS jar produced these:

I've pretty much harvested them all, and the sub is looking a bit iffy. So not sure if i will wait for a second flush.

Yes. Provide water and wait for the second flush. And maybe drill some holes in your FC

The problem with LC is not how fast it colonizes grains, but how slow it colonizes the sugar water, setting the whole grow back.  You also don't know if it's contaminated or not until you put it on cakes or grains, potentially ruining a month or more of work.  This is the reason I've never recommended it.

That is exactly why These 10 grain jars came from agar wedges of a master culture.

From there I then expand the 10 quarts to 30 quarts with grain to grain transfers.

Then I transfer 1 quart per spawn bag containing 6 quarts in each of them, making 30 total 7 quart spawn bags.

Finally, 1 bag get used for spawning each 64 quart monotub.

I also use this method for oysters, and reishi. ....... Today my first batch of 10quart lion's mane jars actually got inoculated.

I am very excited about it

Im not in any rush to be sitting with 10KG of shrooms that i would not know what to do with. So the speed at which i am going at is perfectly fine for my needs. It took just under two weeks for my LC solution. And thankfully it was not contaminated. Well not so far as i can tell. That said i am pretty strict with my sterile procedures.

Thanks wise toad!

To the OP I don't think RR was knocking you for doing LC's. If you ask me they are good practice working with live cultures.

However, he is definitely correct by eluding to the fact that LC work is not the proper way of doing things by saying he "doesn't recommend them".

Mainly due to the risk of crop failure which he mentioned. For the serious grower it is just not worth it to lose hours of work, and finances in the form of supplies, and energy to all due to a little short cut like using an LC.

It is just a lot safer to use Agar than liquid sugars when it comes to culture work from a Pro's point of view. In the long run it actually saves a lot of time once you learn how to do it, i.e. grow cycle timeline, etc.
