why is this happening?
    #14083391 - 03/07/11 08:05 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

can anybody explain why this is happening?

whilst some of the cakes have produced small mushrooms- i believe this to be because the mycelium wasnt left to colonise for quite long enough; these cakes only produce very tiny, ill looking pins, that never develop into full growns. Am worried that this may be some kind of contamination problem and may be at the fault of sterilization procedure. happened to roughly half of the cakes and like i said, only getting small shrooms from successful ones. any answers anyone? help much appreciated

Small mushrooms are a water content problem....Either the cakes are waterlogged or they are too dry....Do they feel heavy or crazy light?

Some are genetically small....But if you're getting tiny mushrooms all over that open up early it is a moisture content problem...

temperature fluctuates between about 66 and 71 as FC is sat next to radiator which comes on in the evenings, chamber kept warm by aquarium heater. Know I need to get some reptile heat pads to heat up the whole thing, just need to get to a pet shop.
fanning and misting about 3 times a day; just the retarded looking ones arent ever amounting to anything, even ones ive redunked to try revitalize them.
Is it possible that my spore syringe just had small genes? Hope not as this means cloning them will not produce the big daddies im used to. Having read previous posts, thought it was a premature mycelium problem as they were birthed after about 24 days

take the heater out of the aquarium, and move it away from the heater a bit, 66 is perfectly fine for fruiting

mist, then fan 3-5 times a day

:whathesaid:

Mist then fan.

We fan after misting to aid in the evaporation of excess water in the tub/on the cakes.  Thus, we create more pinning triggers as well.

think there could be a problem with moisture content- cant tel difference in weights but now you mention it caps are opening up really early and flapping over themselves and growing down and even splitting itsself in half in one case. Any suggestions on how to get the moisture content up?
If I move away from radiator, temp will be too low> but that would explain if terrarium is too dry- with radiator possibly drying out the perlite

What kind of light are you using? How close is the light to the FC?....Is that a SGFC with holes drilled in the bottom?  Due to being kept next to a heater you can put some gloves on and reach down into the perlite to make sure it didn't completely dry out....Need to do some troubleshooting.  When you harvest a cake and you are about to re-dunk it, you can let it dry out a while just to feel how a dry cake weighs....

just using natural daylight, kept out of direct sunlight. do have bedroom lamps on at night however, don't know if that interferes with them. will put some more water in the perlite maybe- just that half the cakes arent producing anything but really ill looking, scrawny albeno pins that don't mature. Suppose I can count them as gonners. Thanks for all the help ppl! will have to leave mycelium longer to cultivate next time methinks

I suggest buying a CFL with a color temp of 6500K (screw in flourescent light).  They are only like 7 bucks at home depot or any hardware store.  Just make sure its a color temp of 6500K.  Put it within a few inches of your FC, on the top or on the side is fine.....Yes its ok to let the cake dry out a little....and they need darkness for 12 hours.  12 hours light and 12 hours dark.  Mushrooms use light for energy and actually do most of their growing in darkness.....
