How to use less bandwidth
    #1409035 - 03/25/03 03:20 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Though it may not be a big problem, but I know there are limits on bandwidth for websites. We could cut back on the usage by not allowing any signature pictures to be hosted on the shroomery server, and if they do want to have pictures in their sig then it should be hosted on their own service. I know there's not that many people that have signatures, but OTD is the largest forum and I see lots of pictures in sigs.

How about this, when I setup my business, I'll have servers for web-hosting, so I'll throw up a signature storage service for the shroomery. Every little bit helps...

Should be within a year here...

excellent idea. i had that one myself. i think there should also be a thread telling everyone how they can do thier part to conserve bandwith. of course, the downside to that is that there would probably be some assholes who would do all they can to waste bandwidth if they know how to do it.

i would start a thread about that, but i don't know what to put in it really. i know we should save bandwidth, i just don't know the best ways to do it.

Why exactly are you concerned about the Shroomery?s bandwidth if the Webmasters aren?t?

That's sarcastic.

It?s supposed to be.

Back in September 2002 the average amount of data per visit used to be 840 kb.
Then the thumbnails with image upload were implemented and the amount of data per visit went back to 530 kb.
Right now we are pretty much in plan, as far I know.

But you are all right in one thing, signature images are annoying and take the focus of what should be important, namely the thread content.

That would be a very generous thing to do.  :smirk:
One thing that also would save bandwidth. Converting all non animated smillies into jpg.

The thumbup for instance is 958 bytes big in gif. And only 468 bytes big in jpg.
And they both look the same. And it save 490 bytes you don't have to download then.  Compression would save bandwidth, and make the site loading faster.

They don?t look the same, the gif file is transparent, the jpg isn?t and can?t be.

Damn your right.... But they can still be downsized. Want me to show you? I have the new downsized thumbsup on my pc. Give me an e-mail address, and i'll mail it to you.

My version saves 777 bytes and is only 181 bytes large.

I know, by reducing the number of colors and whatnot...
Show me your method though.

But this won?t make a considerable difference. It?s the images in avatars, signatures and posted images that make the main bandwidth load.

the webmasters are not concerned about bandwidth? i was not aware of this.

i posted just because i think everyone should know how to conserve bandwidth.
i don't exactly know how to, but if i did know i would do my part to keep costs down to keep the shroomery running.

here is the way i look at it:
more bandwith = more cost
fewer sponsors = less money
no money = no shroomery

i know you know more about this then i do, anno. i am just trying to raise an issue that i think everyone here should care about.

No, not anymore, becuse we have already taken measures to preserve it -> see my post above.

The signatures should not be supported by the shroomery. Posted images should also not be supported. Let people link directly from somebody else his site. So we can all view a fast board.

Maybe setting a maximum upload just for avatars is something. You should check out how large an avatar of maximum size 70 x 70 can become. And set the limit just underneath the maximum. That way we can at least use avatars. And if people get upset about this... Let them pay a certain amount, so they can upload they're porn. (Thats whats uploaded mostly here...) For a certain period depending on the amount they want to pay for all the BS they upload.

Am i right, or am i right?
I'm right!

What does the this have to do with how fast the board is? The board is slow becuase the myswl database is so big and the php is low, not becuase of the pictures....

hmm... I'm a reseller for a datacenter that offers unmetered bandwidth. It has OC-48 connectivity and their policy is as long as you don't crash their network, your site can be as busy as it likes. Only 500 MB of webspace in the package though. I'm sure a quick search of hosting providers could come up with several unmetered hosts that are pretty inexpensive.

There is no such thing as an unmetered host. Read the fine print and there will be a limit.

I couldn't find the fine print, but didn't want to send in a question either. Part of their advertisment goes like this:

Unmetered Data Transfer

Unmetered Data Transfer means just that. We don't meter the amount of traffic you use. You won't get a suprise bill for additional bandwidth. This means that unless your site compromises the performance of the web server (which, by the way, probably won't happen), or the performance of our network - we don't care how much traffic you have. Your site should be successful.

Keep in mind that we don't allow Adult, mp3 download, or software download sites.

With your new server though, there's no need to be looking around for something else. What's the specs of your setup if you don't mind sharing?

"This means that unless your site compromises the performance of the web server (which, by the way, probably won't happen), or the performance of our network - we don't care how much traffic you have."

You would have to find out exactly what they mean by these statements.  Does that mean you can continusly take up half of the ~$40,000/month OC-48?.. there IS a limit somewhere.
