"Hope it Rains When I Die"

Mike Starr, 'Alice In Chains' bassist, and heroin addict dies at a relatively young 44 yo.
His father writes: "My son's death is a terrible shock and tragedy."
Really? The same son who watched a fellow band memeber die from heroin? The same son who wrotes songs about heroin? The same son who did two TV shows on his addiction?
Just doesn't seem shocking.
If Charlie Sheen suddenly died from a coke-abused heart, would that also be shocking?

Sheen is bi-winning, so yes it would be quite shocking.

*Mike Starr
I love Alice in Chains, the title of this thread caught my attention because "Rain When I Die" is one of my favorite songs by them (I can play part of it on the guitar! ).
This is terrible news, I always liked Mike Starr's bass licks better than the new guy's (he quit the band after their second album); now the drummer and the guitarist are the only original band members still left.
But to answer your question: no, it's not really that shocking at all, I'm terribly shocked that his father was terribly shocked by it.

Don't think it was actually raining though. Perhaps a better title might have been "Hope I get pulled over by some Mormon cop in some shithole Utah town and then kick it alone in some fleabag motel like a total freakin' loser'.
Just sayin'...

Well all four original band members were credited for creating that song, I'm not sure who chose the name for it, though; interestingly enough, it actually did rain on the day the lead singer, Layne Staley, died in his Seattle apartment.
I bet you'll never guess the cause of his death!

, hey I'm actually pretty good, I play at this free jam that this lady organizes every Wednesday and Friday evenings/nights, and I get good comments from the musicians that come to play and passers-by. One song that I always play there is "Man in the Box", an Alice in Chains song, and I play it all the way through including the amazing solo.
And I sing, too, so bite me.

real cool guys, make a thread bashing on some dude's dad when he expresses shock that his son died. to me that seems like a perfectly natural reaction, not everybody phrases their words as if they're arguing on a debate forum

In the same interview Staley spoke of the damage caused by his heroin addiction:
"I'm not using drugs to get high like many people think. It's a very difficult thing to explain. My liver is not functioning, and I'm throwing up all the time and shitting my pants. The pain is more than you can handle. It's the worst pain in the world. Dope sick hurts the entire body."
Obviously not to get high.
I guess stopping is not an option when you ride that particular train cuz it hurts so good.

If he had helped his son, maybe he wouldn't have been so shocked.
More importantly, I am shocked that you are shocked at our blunt nature. Not like you haven't seen it before.

He means that he's at the point where the main reason he uses is to avoid withdrawals.

It's hard to stop both because it feels good, and because the body quickly becomes dependent on it. causing excruciatingly painful withdrawals.

I will, once I get a device that can record me; right now I only have a tape recording of me singing "Break on Through" by The Doors, and I don't have anything to convert it to MP3 format with.
I sang "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors once at the jam, and everyone was amazed; I wouldn't be telling people that I can sing without first having received positive feedback on my voice. I can even control my vibratos pretty well, which many people (even some who have had private instructions with a singing coach) have difficulty doing.
Sometimes I have a bit of difficulty with pitch, though, which is weird because I have a pretty good ear when it comes to other instruments like bass, guitar, keyboard, etc...

Maybe the father hasn't had a lot of death in is life, and he didn't fully comprehend that his son would die until he saw it happen? That could be shocking.

If that's true, then his father must've been a complete dumbass to not know that his son was a complete junkie. The signs were there, everywhere.

Even if he new perfectly well, intellectually, that his son was in danger of dying, he could still be emotionally shocked by the event. Understanding and realization are different.

I think that would depend on how we're defining 'shocked'; if we're defining it as being surprised, then his dad would be stupid to be shocked at his son's death. If we're defining it as being emotionally disturbed, then I don't think that would be a stupid reaction.

There are USB compression mikes on the market now for under $100. Check out the Snowball.

Yea, but recording from a compression mikes sound much much better. A laptop mike might prove the point, but it won't do the voice any favours.

I don't know what the Snowball is, and "under $100" sounds pretty expensive for me. I spend most of my money on drugs, and don't have any to spare for fancy electronic equipment.
The people who organize the jam are going to find a way to convert all the tapes to MP3 (they record many of the jams on tape), so I'll probably just wait for that.

Yup, you know what you're talking about.
I mean, I guess I can add a subtle echo effect or something to give it some spice, but really I think it's kind of gay to send a guy a clip of me singing a cappella so I can impress him, I'd rather send OC a clip of me singing with a band backing me up.
