alternative casing layers?!?!

i cant seem to find coco coir or jiffy mix anywhere....are there any other alternatives...such as mixing vermiculite with something??

any ideas where one can find coco coir!?! i checked the hardware, couldnt find shit

Not sure what area you live in but go to your local garden shop (the bigger the better). Where ever they sell plants, pots, soil ect. They most likley will have jiffy mix. Look in the phone book for gardening.

Find coco-coir at petsmart, it's packaged as Bed-a-Beast sometimes. You can also use peat moss (50/50 w/ verm), which has worked well for my friend. It is best to add in a "soil sweetener" such as crushed oyster shells or lime.

you could also use plain vermiculite or potting soil

what about mixing potting soil and vermiculite at a 50/50 ratio??? then lightly saturating


coco coir can be found at pet stores in what general section???

You can also use Miracle Grow with Aqua Coir, (moisture control); the people here are uptight (some of them, those who have posted "against" previous posts of mine where I include that) but this stuff is great and cheap--espicially if you cant find coir.

If you dont believe me Old Timer (www.mycotopia.net he has a straw tek/wafer tek etc) at Mycotopia.net swears by the stuff.

I saw that Miracle Grow with Aqua Coir at Walmart and was wondering if that would be good to use. I noticed that it does have some Miracle Grow nutrition additives though. Is this good for casing? Anybody else know?

yea today at the hardware store i saw lots of different miracle grow potting soils

i'll check out this aqua stuff

Straight verm works but sucks compared to peat.

Look on a potting soil bag at the ingredients. Look for: peat moss (sphagnum, etc.), vermiculite.

Make sure that it doesn't have any actual soil, bark, humus (basically anything that will sustain competitor microorganisms) in it. You want it as inert as possible. Perlite is ok.
