leaching poo
    #1408691 - 03/25/03 10:57 AM (21 years, 28 days ago)

I just got some horse poo and it smells like ammonia.
Could anyone please give me a good method for leaching horse poo? Thank you.

First off....is it dried out?

If its not dried out....dry it out in front of a fan...this might take quite a few days

After its dried out...put the poo into pillow case and shove it into a 5 gallon bucket or a garbage can...and add water.
Dump the water out and replace it several times...let the poo sit in the bucket for a couple days.

Then pasturize it after a few days.

Easy way to pasturize :

Put the poo into a pillow case, submerge in pot with water with a weight on top at 170?F for one hour.
Don?t exceed 170?F, check the temperature frequently with a candy thermometer.
After 1 hour take the pillow case out and use your oven rack on top of the sink. Put it on that and let it drain for several hours. When it has cooled down somewhat , give it a squeeze, as hard as you can. Then fluff it up and leave on the rack to drain/dry out a bit more.
After it?s cold (might take several hours) you can spawn it.

good luck!

I crumble up my poo onto a plastic tarp in the garage, and let it dry out completely.
Store the dried dookie until needed. I don't leech the poo after it has been dried, it goes straight to the pillow case  to be pasturized.

So does everyone.

But he said "I just got some horse poo and it smells like ammonia."
So he needs to leach it.

when u say leave it in the for a couple days, should I leave it in there with water and change the water once or twice a day? or leave just the pillow case (or in my case sheet) in there with no water?

after it has dried out...if you are still smelling ammonia.

leave the poo in a bucket with water and change the water once or twice a day.

can you comment on whether or not you feel
that leeching negatively affects the nutritional
value of the poop?

I feel like leeching, while helping to reduce
harmful ammonia levels, has to also be sluicing
off some of the nutrients in the dung.

curious.

kramer says that dung has nutrients to spare
how else can you go get some 2 year old dung and it still be the shit?(pun intended).
as it is in itself a pure life substaining base for the mycelium
at least thats what kramer says
