Sounds weird. But any of you Buddhists, or anyone into meditation should try it.

Hookah is great for chilling but i think the nicotine would be a bit too stimulating after a while if you're straight up meditating, and breathing wont be as good.

Nicotine is way too stimulating for me to relax after smoking a cigarette, much less meditate or even focus on anything (unless I'm on ritalin in the first place, which causes me to smoke far more often).

Hookah though, I dunno.

Either way, I'd advise that you make an effort to meditate without any sort of "aid." It's most beneficial by far when you make it a part of your sober routine.

I've never been able to meditate on tobacco, it always ends up being more like a trance and visual experience for me. Especially noticeable with Nicotiana Rustica. I never really had a point of concentration, my body just shut down and I went on a journey with it. This might all be in my head, I haven't really read much into any other persons personal experiences. Though some people do smoke until they pass out into a visionary state, and that is what I have arrived into a few times.

You can get high on meditation.

You can trip balls on meditation, in fact. I have had some very intense visual experiences from meditation alone.

That said, meditation won't benefit you in your daily life as anything other than another high unless you treat it as something other than another high.

Life is meditation, nicotine ends life/meditation.

I would be more into hookahs but Bill Hicks has kept me away from tobacco.

Yeah, I know. I try to make everything I do a meditation practice. Walking, eating, running, hiking. And just meditating while sitting still. I don't do it to get high, I'm just sharing my experiences with tobacco and meditation.

I think it depends on how you define meditation and on what you're trying to get out of meditation...

In the Buddhist sense, meditation should be a daily routine, almost like prayer.

Would you need a hookah to say the Lord's Prayer before dinner?

Just sharing the wisdom I've gained from my experiences... drugs can "enhance" meditation in the short term, but if you become too attached to these flavoring agents then the mental nutrition meditation provides will be offset and even replaced by an attraction to these fleeting and unnecessary adulterants.

I dunno though. I like to meditate while driving. :smirk:

I agree. But one could become attached to meditation as well. As the Buddhists say, everything in moderation. As I said, tobacco leads me more towards trance and "opens" me more, it's really not meditation. Through my own experiences; both drugged and sober, I can go deeper sober, and easier into it drugged. I've never been able to attain what I had in a sober state in a drugged state. Plants are a great vehicle for reaching higher points of awareness, but  frequent use can further wrap into the illusion and lead more to confusion.
I'm not a Buddhist, so I'm sure our opinions on meditation will greatly differ. Which is the beautiful thing about it, there really is no absolute way to meditate as there's thousands of ways to do it.

I'm not Buddhist either, I base my statements about meditation on my own experiences. I avoid joining religions because I don't have enough dedication to one messianic figure or another to wade through the bullshit.

I used to meditate a LOT, but it was honestly connected to the aimless neurochemical experimentation of my earlier youth. I basically saw it as another way to see some crazy shit.

Now I'm beginning to understand that meditation is more like a daily meal for the brain, or like a workout. Something with enormous benefits, if you have the patience and tenacity to work it into your routine. Sadly enough, it is harder for me to meditate daily now that I see it that way than when I saw it as a way to explore alternate dimensions.

a large portion of the benefits of meditating come from the fact that you are taking large, full, regular breaths of oxygen

nicotine is a stimulant, anyway. it will speed up your mind/thoughts, making meditation more difficult.

Yeah... I remember back in the day, I would try sitting outside and smoking a cigarette while reading a book. It actually slowed down my reading and decreased my comprehension because it wigged out my brain. Nicotine's psychoactive effects are VERY strange and VERY difficult to qualify, at least at the cigarette-level dosage. It makes me want to try this rustica shit or some other method of taking a hallucinogenic-level dose just to see just what the fuck this drug is really about. The threat of vomiting and explosive diarrhea deters me.

Is that (about meditation mainly being beneficial because of oxygen) based on any particular study or experiment?

not mainly because of the oxygen, but its definitely a big part of it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pranayama

Medical

Several researchers have reported that pranayama techniques are beneficial in treating a range of stress related disorders,[28] improving autonomic functions,[29] relieving symptoms of asthma,[30][31] and reducing signs of oxidative stress.[32][33] Practitioners report that the practice of pranayama develops a steady mind, strong will-power, and sound judgement,[22] and also claim that sustained pranayama practice extends life and enhances perception.[34]

Interesting how common it is for us for us to deprive ourselves of simple, full, consistent lungfuls in our daily lives.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the psychological benefits of meditation were indirectly related to chronic oxygen deprivation in absence of meditation...

Always. I Am not a believer in one solo type of meditation. I find that exploring your mind and thoughts is one good way to meditate.

In my opinion, meditation is not about "exploring your thoughts," it's about freeing yourself from them.

Linking meditation to any type of goal that you can conceive of is a mistake. You really need to see it as something akin to eating or sleeping if you want to get anything of lasting benefit out of it.

yes you can be meditating while washing your dishes or petting your kitty cat. it doesn't have to be a blank-thoughts state of mind always all u need to do is remain in the state "I AM" while making your current experience the defining state of your being

let your mind take u to other worlds even, just don't attach yourself to anything. remain as "I AM"

don't let your thoughts consume you. take control over you seat as godhead and be as the observer of these passing thoughts
