growing cyans in a fridge?!

My brother just got back from his boyfriend's house.
Apparently, this guy grows cyanescens in his fridge.
My brother is fairly well-versed in mycology, and even he was shocked to hear this. Apparently the guy literally just went to the park, dug up the mycelium, brought it home, cultivated in his fridge. No prior training or experience.

He's selling them $20 for 5 grams!!!

Apparently he took the mycelium, packed it in a pan with some wood chips, sprayed it with water, covered it up with a liquor store bag.

I just gave up the entire goods of the fridge tek he's using.
Suffice to say, I'm going to do a lot more mushroom hunting from now on.

Did you actually see the fridge fungus?

Cyans are really easy to spot; look for the short golden ones with the wavy caps that readily stain very blue.
Then, apparently, just dig up the earth underneath the mushrooms, bring it home, mix it with wood chips, spray with water, cover with liquor store bag. No sterile technique needed.
I'm in awe. Every cubensis grow technique I've read suddenly sounds like using a flamethrower to kill a fly.

My brother did, and as I said he is well-versed in mycology, has grown his own reishe, shiitake, and cubensis mushrooms several times, gone to many mushroom classes, obsessed over the power of cyans, etc.
He actually kept a non-fruiting cyanescens mycelium in the fridge for about a year because everything he had been told indicated that cultivating it would be way more complicated. Then our mom threw it out.

Raping patches is not a nice thing to do to other people who live in your city.
Just take one wood chip, or less than 10% of the patch and leave the rest.

No matter which technique you use, growing cubensis is ten times easier than growing cyans.
The best thing to do is get a cyan print or gill fragment, grow it on agar, put it on grain, put that into wood chips to get the spawn. That way you can have hundreds of pounds of spawn from a tiny amount of spores.
Digging up an established patch is absolutely the wrong way to go about it.

this is a throw back to very early mushroom cultivation.
paul stamets also has wrote about cyans growing off wood chips around the trees at some college in WA, and how students would take the colonized wood chips and bring them to where fresh wood chips where spread. never heard of a frig being used as a fruiting chamber. maybe it's not pulled in?

I see where you're coming from there, it does seem disruptive to the ecosystem and the community. That said, how is it harder than growing cubes?

I was wondering if you were asking some mycological question I couldn't understand.
