not true at all
the verm acts as a casing layer, it helps retain moisture in your cakes
if they haven't been in fruiting too long you can still do a roll...

Bio, I think he's talking about in the jars.........But the dry verm layer is definately important.

i think hes talking about colonizing jars, and i am pretty sure without it you will get a nearly 100% contam rate.

Great, well I'll inoculate anyway as I'm almost out of BRF and report the results.

yeah verm layer is important, but you can get away with it, if you have some type of filter on the lid!

What do you guys think about opening it up, adding the dry verm layer and then resterilizing? I haven't inoculated yet.
Would it cook the flour or dehydrate it or something?

as long as u didnt cook it the first time u sterilized do the exact same thing after u add the verm. I have 12 jars that i burned and all looked dark brown, they are all colonizing fine anyway.

During a shortage of verm I decided to try micropore tape over each hole for filtered gas exchange on my BRF jars. All cakes colonized and fruited with no contams. Since then I have been using micropore tape over the holes of my BRF jars with no issues. I've read posts by some others that do the same, also some that use tyvek.
Rather than re-open the jars at this point I would recommend you add micropore tape over the holes, re-steam the jars and then inoculate. Add another piece of micropore tape over each hole immediately after inoculating each jar.
The nice thing about substituting tyvek/micropore tape for verm is that you get an extra 1/2" or more of substrate at the top. The cakes come out larger than a typical cake which helps with overall yield.
In the future though I would recommend to stick to the PF Tek word-for-word. A new grower that substitutes or omits things is more boondoggler than mycologist.

I wasn't substituting anything, just forgeting. Also I've actually got verm, so maybe some other time I'll try the tape.

I was reading up on proper sterilization for my first grow and i didn't realize the tyndallization method was for grain jars not bfr cakes.
