How much parafilm?

im PCing some agar right now so i have a few hours before i need to wrap my cultures
i see that the parafilm has lines where it can easily be cut into squares
do i cut squares and stretch the parafilm to cover the entife petri dish
do i use multiple squares
i found a youtube video that says to cut a rectangle out of the parafilm and just wrap that around the edges of the petri
any advice?

I use four squares to wrap a petri dish. You can do it with three squares, but it tends to tear sometimes.
You can stack two dishes together and wrap them both with that same 4 squares. You only wrap the edges to provide for filtered gas exchange. RR

do you cut 4 individual squares and wrap one at a time
or do you cut a big square consisting of the 4 squares and then wrap it?

ah i think i got it
i cut a row of 4 squares
stretched it a bit
then wrapped it around the edges of the petri
seemed to go around completely a little more than 2 times
thanks !

I use two squares (4"x2" rectangle) and wrap around the edges. For me, two squares wraps around 1.5 times. Is that enough, or do we need two layers for some reason (wrapped two times?)

I cut my parafilm ling ways and use two 1/2squares for a 60 mm dish and get 2 1/2 to 3 wraps, nice and neat
I use the same 1/2 long ways by 3 squares and go 2 to 3 times around a 100mm dish.
It helps to preheat the start end for a second over the alcohol lamp just to get ting going.
Less then 2x around tends to either dry out or the sharp edge of the petri can cut the parafilm, then the culture drys out rapidly.

What are the benefits to using parafilm? Is it JUSt to keep the lid on the petri, and aid in moisture retention?

No. No, man. Shit, no man. I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' somethin' like that man.

i think its to give filtered gas exchange in the petri
as well as keep the lid on
it also pretty easy to use with my slippery-ass alcohol-drenched gloves on

I cut out little 2" long strips that are like .5 or .75" wide and stretch it around, I've gotten perfect at doing it. 1.25-1.5x around. Sometimes i can go 1.75x around.
There are no real tricks to it either. If you've stretched parafilm, you'll know how it feels as it stretches, and it's pretty easy to stretch it around, as long as you're wrapping the petri dish, it'll stick to the petri dish.
Clingwrap might be the same material as parafilm, but they don't wrap the same...

So ive run a few agar plates in my time and never used parafilm... But never wanted long term storage either, wich is what im guessing that for. Any way what the debate on parafilm nowdays since this threads stil active? Is clingfilm bad cus of no GE? Does micropore tape not offer a cheap alternative?
