Finally started!
    #14087461 - 03/08/11 03:53 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I started writing this message last night but was smoking a blunt and about 6 beers down, then i got paranoid and stopped writing lol but i cant remember if I REALLY didnt post and am too lazy to check. ANNYWAYS, so I was finally able to muster up all of the required ingredients for my mycology experiment and I must say it is byfar one of the most exciting things I have done. It takes everything I have to not keep checking up on my jars every couple of hours to see if there has been any mycellium growth. I used the standard pf tek and have my cakes incubating at about 24C (not sure what that is farenheit since farenheit is fucking stupid and makes no sense to me). The bad news is that inoculation took place at about 12am saturday night (or sunday morning if you want to be a smartass) and now about 3 days later there isnt any sign of mycellium growth. Its still a little early so im not worried and on a good note there isnt any contamination either so thats always a bonus. I cant wait to harvest these fuckers and fly through space, i mean if they were psilocybe which, officer, they are not

lol. good stuff brotha, keep us up to date.

3 days is early for MS. Check in 4. I check my jars 3 days after inoculation for contams then don't look @ them for 7 days then shake. Done in 3-4 weeks (but that's grains in quarts.)

I know how hard it is to NOT look @ the bitches. I caused early pinning on my first bulk run due to constantly messing w/ my tubs.

GL, get some pics once you see some white stuff...

patience....

But your moisture content inside your jars might be wrong which cause a slower mycelium growth. Also, if you use multispore inoculation it takes a little longer compared to LC or agar culture.

Grain jars take longer than BRF verm cakes isn't that right? My glasses that I decided to use this time are about 100ml larger than a half pint jar but they were tapered perfectly and on sale, and it isn't canning season so nowhere had actual mason jars. It should be fine though and once I am done this i basicly have spores for life if im smart with my harvest.
I was looking up what to do with used up cakes, the first thing i heard about was ppl making a tea out of it. Not only did that sound disgusting but heat degrades the good stuff so thats retarded. The next thing i heard of was outdoor planting. You just dig a hole, put some verm then your crumbled spent cake, some straw and cow shit and your golden. Obviously thats just a runthrough of how it works but once i have my leftover cakes i might do that with em, seems better than throwing em away.
New posts while I was writing huh?
Yeah I was thinking the moisture content might have been a bit high in my cups since there was condensation within them, but i also read that so long as there isnt actual pooling in the bottom of the cups your fine and there isn't so thats good.
As for the agar, I still haven't looked into what agar even is so I don't know what you mean. Maybe that will be my next topic of research after the outdoor methods.

My vocab might have been wrong but I was talking about a agar isolate. But yea you can start an agar culture with MS and then isolate a strain.

wow thats teriffic. So if i was to see a specific mushroom that was doing exceptional i could take its spores and use it to make a whole batch of that lucrative strain?

:nono:
you take a clone of that mushroom to agar to grain to G2G to bulk & hope it's active...

Spores are always a crap shoot.

Fun post dude.

"I used the standard pf tek" == you started off right

When you get shrooms, you can take a spore print or two and use them to continue.

One note, be certain not to move the jars around, especially at the
beginning of colonization.  You want to avoid shifting the verm layer around.

Good luck,

JD

Holy shit man thanks for that advice, ive been checking them 2 times a day. yikes! I have been quite gentle though so i think it shouldn't be an issue. I will be sure not to touch them for a few days now though.

No worries.  I have only lost one jar where I think that this was the cause.

I also had a dozen colonizing jars fall off a high place.  I lost about
four to breakage, but also lost two more to mold later.

You can still look at them, but set them on a level surface and rotate
them to see all sides.  You want to avoid tilting.

Good luck,

JD

So i carefully checked on my cakes a couple minutes ago and to my surprise since this morning (around 8)when there was no mycellium growth until now 4 of the jars have started to colonize. One quite impressively about the size of a dollar (coin). Its white so thats good, no signs of any contams to far. Still keeping the temp around 24C. Im glad to see a pressure cooker really isnt necessary, thats what was putting me off so long but this is pretty easy if your a relatively intelligent person whos willing to do some research.
