Practical Buddhism Book Suggestions
    #14070953 - 03/05/11 01:24 PM (13 years, 4 hours ago)

Anyone here care to share any good Buddhist or related texts that involve the ideal state of mind, without going into superstition or mythology? Basically, books like Be Here Now. Plain text is obviously fine, I wouldn't need the graphic book format. Thanks!

Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Nhat Hanh is very good.
http://www.amazon.com/Living-Buddha-Christ-10th-Anniversary/dp/159448239X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299356959&sr=8-1

It's very down to earth, short, direct, and to the point. If you liked Be Here Now, I'd assume you'd like this as well. This book in particular points out the similarities between Buddhism and Christianity, and shows how they aren't really all that different once you strip them down.

"The Buddha in Your Mirror"

"You Don't Have to Sit on the Floor"

are both very good and practical

'zen mind, beginner's mind' is a good read, i think you might like it - it's got a natural simplicity to it and doesn't delve into metaphysics or anything

"Buddha's Brain" by Rick Hanson, at amazon. It's a practical guide to how and why changing your neurology through meditation is a good way of acheiving spirituality. It contains everything from guided meditations to diagrams of the brain to quotes from Buddhist texts---all presented in a straightforward, not pedantic, manner.

Not a book, but it's a pretty interesting lecture.

Jack Kornfield has some of the most comprehensible advice pertaining to westerners leading a spiritual life IMO.

A Path with Heart http://www.amazon.com/Path-Heart-Through-Promises-Spiritual/dp/0553372114/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299612359&sr=8-1

He goes through many Buddhist teachings, personal accounts, and other people's stories in a practical sense that one can apply to meditation and every day life.  It is simple to understand and follow. The further you read, the deeper he delves into the many perils of spiritual life one may run into.  This is the book that tuned me into self inquiry, mindfulness, loving kindness, the dharma, and the Buddha in general. Hope you enjoy!
