whys houldn't I eat chickenmushrooms off eucalyptus trees?
    #14086119 - 03/08/11 01:14 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

are there any poisonous lookalikes.
I just steamed some in their own moisture very fresh in the microwave and sboy they have this really chicken like tame spicy flavour to them, I mean I've mostly detested gourmet mushroom flavours, but this ones really tasty, grew off a huge eucalyptus stump.
Whats the issue, Ive read I shouldnt it them, but why?
and are there lookalikes?
I havent seen such a good looking laetiporus and the thought that there might be a risk involved (ha, if anyway) makes me want to eat it even more...... was a bit miffed it doesnt have that real bacon or chicken bite to it, but the risk of poisoning myself is somehow alluring like scoring drugs off a dody dealer under a bridge, an adventure for old Dom Bombadilweed...

You found Laetiporus gilbertsonii. "Edible with caution. Prized by many, this species is also known to cause gastrointestinal upsets. Controversy exists whether the upsets are caused by old specimens, improperly cooked specimens, specimens growing on certain trees (Eucalyptus has be mentioned as a suspect host), or some other cause. If you decide to try it, eat only the young, fresh, growing margins, in small quantities, and cook it thoroughly."

The look a likes would be other Laetiporus - since yours was growing on eucalyptus it is Laetiporus gilbertsonii.

Post a picture of it.

I thought it was that if it grew on Hemlock it was a bad idea to eat it...?

Well I only ate a tiny amount, like a coupla chicken strips if you catch my drift. Didnt do nothing, though it was very fresh. but the dish I made just wasnt very tasty so i discarded most of it. a pity though. it was the best laetiporus specimen ive found, be it the eucalyptus loving
and stomach ache warning sign triggering gilbertsonni of hemlock and eucalyptus... but honestly my tummy didnt hurt, and I only steamed em for like 9 minutes or something in the microwave with their own moisture providing the steam.
I think this mushroom at least the sulfureus one, off oaks, etc.
could be a FANTASTICally delicious vegetarian  version of chicken. I mean it REALLY really seemed to have great culinary potential. I'm amazed coz Im full of shit with gourmet mushrooms, they seem lame to me, the flavours, I hate dried shiitake flavour, button mushrooms though are delish... though king oysters etc. just with enough BUTTER, is fantasic, and porcini too.
but this mushroom has another mildly spicy aroma to it when cooked, almost unmushroomlike.

Eucalyptus as suspect host. I am just curious as to this coz on Stamets 3rd edition growing G M M, there is a photo on the cover of these vertical logs of Eucalyptus from brazil, presumably it is written in the book, covered in shiitake.

Do shiitakes off eucalyptus cause any upset? I'm not sure the eucalyptus thing warrants caution or not, considering they grow the damn shiiiiiiiiitake on eucalyptus in Brazil on large scale, seemingly.
whats up with that?

Bottles are fly tramps, I have a severe problem with flies, at the moment of the photo I was trying with fly tramps, but It did not work.

The only solution effective I found, is total isolation, I fully cover (as a box) the logs with Polyethylene plastic, It also protect the fruit body from the rain.

My little brother is highly allergic to eucalyptus, maybe it only messes with people who have the allergy.
