Im about to noc up some jars and i only have a bic lighter to flame my needle.
the last time i did this i notice the needle tip turning black. So id flame, inject and then wipe with a cloth.
Then flame again for new jar.
Is that black stuff going to damage my babies!?!?!

Flame sterilization with a BIC lighter is just fine.
If you do not want to deal with soot I would suggest purchasing a propane torch with a fatboy tank(For added stability). I spent under $20 and got the adapter and a 17Oz(?) tank. So far it has been months and it is still going strong.

another option would be a denatured alcohol lamp. 10 bucks on ebay.

I get the same effect when using a lighter to sterilize my needles.
All of my jars have colonized perfectly fine with no contaminants or trace of soot in the substrate.
Through experimenting, I found that wiping the needle down with an alcohol pad before the next flame sterilization greatly reduces the amount of buildup on the needle. I even wipe it off sometimes after I flame sterilize and let it dry quickly (using 99% alcohol) before sticking it in an inoculation point. This keeps the suit from getting stuck on the micropore tape.
I'm planning on upgrading to an alcohol lamp for my next inoculation, as they are cheap and hands-free.

Believe it or not 70% is more effective.

Trade List! Don't use incubators. An incubator is for contamination as brothels are for STDs. Sure you get sex, but is it worth it?

70% is more effective because it does'nt dry nearly as fast as 99 or 90%

70% alcohol's effectivness is on its direct use on microbes, not as a flame.
The higher 30% water content helps alcohols action on killing microbes as a disinfectant.

On a side note, alcohol is not effective against fungal and bacterial spores...
