first bulk attempt.
    #14085575 - 03/08/11 08:11 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

is there any type of bulk substrate that i can make with brf, coarse + medium verm and peatmoss? id love to try a bulk tray but i also want to use the materials i have already.

i was thinking of making a tray with the a course verm + peatmoss then coating it with a nice bit of brf and then spawning  a grain jar to that. would that work or would it fail to colonize?

any help here would be hot.
thanks guys the shroomery is the best

UPDATE

later down i decided to do a straw + Coir + Corse Verm tray spawned. heres the pictures up to now.

and a little knot cluster

update, knots to pins, pins to fruits  its coming along. i pulled the substrate out of the tray so that it can fruit like a cake, i will dunk and roll it after this flush i think

Peat isn't suitable.
You can spawn to wet verm, 'rez effect' it's called.
A brick of coir seems to be in your future.

You are clearly getting started.  Pick out an existing tek and follow it to the letter.

You will have chances to adapt the method as you go forward.

Good luck,

do you have any links to that verm idea. should there be any nutrient added? or just straight verm, yah im thinking of going to the pet store today and getting a block of coir.

should i use a larger tray for these than my casings where i used a rather large  tray  about 4 inches deep and 5 diameter.

or should i make a tub specifically for spawn and not use a sgfc.

this is my first steps into the world of spawn and it would be awesome if you help me with some of the subtle details involved.

Go read for a couple weeks, come back here and ask questions that show you've done some homework.

I wouldn't use brf for a bulk substrate. Never hurts to try though... And peat moss is usually used for casings. Look up what mushroom like and try and find things that have alot of it in it. Experminting is research and trial and error based on logical information to find out new things.

i just wanna use what i got. money isnt an issue so if i really need some coir then lets go get some i say, but im intrested in trying something new or getting results from something that hasnt been done much.

Go get the coir brotha. You'll be mighty happy. While you're out pick up a large tub for you bulk spawn. Check out Damion5050 Coir Tek here

Also, check the first few pages of the AMU Link in my signature. We've got lots of bulk teks in there.

As for the straight verm, :justdontknow: Never done PF tek...Just went straight to grains -> coir+verm--> :scaryshroom:

thanks thats a good link.

if i used a smaller tub i assume i could do that with smaller ratio of sub and spawn. i have 4 jars filled with a P.cube blue meanie (keeper). should i use all them for one tub?

Use all of them for that recipe, unless you just use less coir+verm mixture.

I'd line the bottom of the cooler w/ a trashbag just to be sure...

i have 4 cups of spawn. not quarts

therefore i figure ill just change the ratios to cups rather than quarts.

i went out and bought some coir and just happened to stumble across some straw on the side of the road, so i grabbed a handful of that shit and now im in business. my spawn jars should be done colonizing by the weeks end that will give me time to prepare a mono tub or something.

4 cups = 1 quart...

Do you have a way of properly pasteurizing the straw? If not, put it outside for awhile until you can.

You're not going to have enough spawn for a mono. I'd recommend A Tub on Tub FC or Make a small bulk substrate & put it in your SGFC or whatever cake FC you have.

if i were to take a big tube sock and stuff it full of straw and pasteurize in a pot of water and boil for 2 hours would that be sufficient? or is there a more advance form of pasteurization needed for straw

That's closer to sterilization. Pasteurization is holding the object between 140-165 for 1 hour...Now that's the center of the straw for 1 hour @ 140, not the exterior.

I'd seriously hold off on anything that needs to be truly pasteurized for now. Just got w/ coir+verm it works great & you won't be disappointed.

Be sure to let your bulk substrate consolidate for 2-3 days once it's 100% also. I normally just leave mine till they start pinning in the tubs then introduce to fruiting conditions.

A great way to pasutize straw is in an ice chest. with water around 160 (have to maintain 140-160 F for atleast an hour). use an FC lid to hold the straw under.

Also if you going to add other (more fine ingredients) then mix them all up with your straw and put into a porus pillow case and tie it off at the top. then submerdge for the duration of pasturization.

(be careful though i had the bottom of one of my pillow cases stat loosing threads and almost spilled the sub all over lol).

i could probly find and post the tek if you would like

Do coir! Its is so easy and cheap no pH issues or anything. Just pasturize and mix with spawn and its ready to go without any additives.

fixed...Damion5050's tek is NOT pasteurization nor sterilization. It's somewhere between, but verm & coir are extremely contam resistant as is properly pasteurized Hpoo+straw...

YEP! my bulk consists of verm, coir, straw, worm castings, gypsum, a lil brf and hydrated lime for the pasteurizing water.

Interesting though: i didnt know that coir was all ph'd up and ready to go. i might do a couple bluk trays with just coir/verm. bur for my mono's im using ingredients above^

and yes im gonna use coir, but i was just contemplating making 1 straw tray as an experiment, see how it does ya know.

what other parts do you add to a straw substrate? would you use coir and verm, or just verm? just wondering!

thanks

Honestly i just mixed her up and threw her in lmao, i didnt bother measuring or anything (just used what shallow knowledge i have of other bulk recipes and what looked good too me).

but my mono seems to be colonizing very well. id call it 75%+. i deff think the straw is a good idea though (it seems to be working great for me).

only prob is i think the sub was a bit on the moist side after i drained it the best i could in the pillow case, Next time im gonna use a bit more straw in the mix to fix the problem

cool thanks, thats a good idea!

im definatly thinking im gonna make a really shallow tray with straw and one one jar. just to see what kinda substrate it is and how mycellium will colonize it. just fricken around ya know.

yea i feel ya. i bet all people who do mycology do some sort of experiments. just plane ol fun lol.

i haven't done straight straw, IMO i would try to make the sub at-least a good 3 inches deep, i would use a smaller tub rather than make it shallow. but either way im sure you will get a feel for how the straw is going to act for you.

you are talking about just straight straw rite?

oh, yea i guess its just prefrence. i used all 3 in mine puls wrm castings, brf...ect. i would say 60% straw 30 coir and 10 verm sounds pretty juicy lmao..

either way is should be fine tho

tray looks great :awethumb:

However, I wouldn't recommend opening it as you're introducing too much O2 & letting out too much CO2, which will trigger pinning too early. :2cents:

i found a great way to pasteurize my sub. i used a large cooler made from Styrofoam. and then i took a tube sock and stuffed it with broken up straw, coir, and verm. then i boiled the water.

then i laid the sock right up to the side of the cooler, and used a meat thermometer to poke through the side wall of the cooler into the center of the tube sock. then i poured water in, and watched the temp rise. once it reached 150 i started poking holes in the lid ( just about six in the center. and the temp held for 1 hour at 160. it did fluctuate a bit, but it never went over 175, and never went under 150 for the whole hour.

Don't let it scare you man. The first time I ever made a bulk, I made my own recpipe. I use coco coir, cut up straw, manure, and coffee grounds. There was one time I did all that plus worm castings. Off a tray that is 6"x12" ish, I can pull 3-4 dried ounces if well cared for.

I understand that you want to use what you already have, I was just giving you an idea. Def try it out in the future; Your mushrooms will be rather happy. Mmmmmm, mushrooms. They are calling my name again, and I can't wait till they are finished. I foresee a fantastic time in the near future.

Do coir! Its is so easy and cheap no pH issues or anything. Just pasturize add boiling water and mix with spawn and its ready to go without any additives.

fixed...Damion5050's tek is NOT pasteurization nor sterilization. It's somewhere between, but verm & coir are extremely contam resistant as is properly pasteurized Hpoo+straw...

Damions bucket tek holds the temp between 175 and 150 for 90 minutes.

How is that not pasteurization? I measured the temps. It started at 175 and ended at 150 around 90 minutes later. Sounds like pasteurization to me. Yeah the water is boiling but the temp comes down immediately when you dump it onto the contents.

Fixed.

When I tried coarse coir it eventually turned green on the larger chunks.

Also usually a sweet smell is bacteria. Doesn't mean it won't make it tho. If the smell gets strong I usually try to air it out. The bacterial action can suck the oxygen out and stall the myc. Once this happens, it's toast.

Of course if you air it out, you risk those big top chunks of coir and pieces of straw turning green.

I'm betting against that tub.

Yes a sweet smell can be bacteria, but recently when my mono was about 4 days old i opened it to check prgress and i swore i could smell some type of contam, "i even cut into mty sub to check, didnt find anything. And the mono is fruiting as we speak. IDK if its the straw, coco, or other ingredients but my bulk kinda had that smell and turned out good.

this is a self cased spawn tray. its got a bout 4 inches of spawned sub and 1 inch of non spawned.

my question is, do i wait for the unspawned 'casing layer' to colonize or do i fruit it once the bottom is colonized?

thanks guys.

Your terminology is still kindof confusing.

What I think you mean to say is that you mixed the spawn with the bulk substrate and put a 1" top layer on it at the time you made it.

A casing by contrast is applied after full colonization and is not necessary for cubensis.

Normally you would let that colonize solid before fruiting it. But 1" is very thick for a top layer. Normal is 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Are we talking about the tub with the coarse coir and straw?

its coir straw and verm, but yeah. i guess i read the tec wrong,i thought it said to add a layer of sub on top of the layer of spawned sub ( the sub with grain throughout it). so i did that.

im sure it will be fine, ill wait till its fully colonized.

to after that should i use a peat moss / verm casing or would it be best to leave it uncased.

Thanks

yea i would deff recommend a thin verm layer, Worked great for me on everything.

I have one cased with peat/verm but it was taking too long to colonize the casing so i just scraped the access back off and im gnna fruit it soon. Casing is just a bunch of extra bull when it comes to cubes IMO.

But a verm layer (like when you dunk and roll ur cakes) Does Wonders... i would deff recommend it. other-wise you end up waiting on pins for an extra week

here is some pictures of pins

10 have been counted, but there are some more knots i expect to turn to pins over night.

my tray has bruised a bit i suppose from over misting. im thinking about taking the whole cake out of the tray and fruiting the second flush like that. perhaps sprinkle some dry verm on it.

any thoughts?

Great man. I'd consider trimming off those little uncolonized bits now. Cut, don't pull.

And dunking straw can be dicey if you leave it in there too long. That was my experience anyway. Keep the water cold and the dunk time short.

from what you can see, what would you say the conditions are. should i fan more or mist more. do the fruits look like they are getting what they need. i cant really be certain cause im so new at this but they look beautiful to me. i forgot to mention i harvested 1g off that big cake on top of the 25g wet that i harvested so it comes to 35g wet if you count the g i took off before those pictures.

thanks for all your commetns

6 might be alright. Do you really dunk straw that long?

Word. That's my thinking too. It turns nasty on you if you soak it too long.
