BIG STEVE said: Do coir! Its is so easy and cheap no pH issues or anything. Just pasturize add boiling water and mix with spawn and its ready to go without any additives.
fixed...Damion5050's tek is NOT pasteurization nor sterilization. It's somewhere between, but verm & coir are extremely contam resistant as is properly pasteurized Hpoo+straw...
Damions bucket tek holds the temp between 175 and 150 for 90 minutes.
How is that not pasteurization? I measured the temps. It started at 175 and ended at 150 around 90 minutes later. Sounds like pasteurization to me. Yeah the water is boiling but the temp comes down immediately when you dump it onto the contents.
Fixed.

its starting to colonize. has a sorta sweet smell too it right now, but i assume thats just the straw and the coir.

i like the way that tray looks what do you guys think.
When I tried coarse coir it eventually turned green on the larger chunks.
Also usually a sweet smell is bacteria. Doesn't mean it won't make it tho. If the smell gets strong I usually try to air it out. The bacterial action can suck the oxygen out and stall the myc. Once this happens, it's toast.
Of course if you air it out, you risk those big top chunks of coir and pieces of straw turning green.
I'm betting against that tub.

Yes a sweet smell can be bacteria, but recently when my mono was about 4 days old i opened it to check prgress and i swore i could smell some type of contam, "i even cut into mty sub to check, didnt find anything. And the mono is fruiting as we speak. IDK if its the straw, coco, or other ingredients but my bulk kinda had that smell and turned out good.

this is a self cased spawn tray. its got a bout 4 inches of spawned sub and 1 inch of non spawned.
my question is, do i wait for the unspawned 'casing layer' to colonize or do i fruit it once the bottom is colonized?
thanks guys.

Your terminology is still kindof confusing.
What I think you mean to say is that you mixed the spawn with the bulk substrate and put a 1" top layer on it at the time you made it.
A casing by contrast is applied after full colonization and is not necessary for cubensis.
Normally you would let that colonize solid before fruiting it. But 1" is very thick for a top layer. Normal is 1/4 to 1/2 inch.
Are we talking about the tub with the coarse coir and straw?

its coir straw and verm, but yeah. i guess i read the tec wrong,i thought it said to add a layer of sub on top of the layer of spawned sub ( the sub with grain throughout it). so i did that.
im sure it will be fine, ill wait till its fully colonized.
to after that should i use a peat moss / verm casing or would it be best to leave it uncased.

Thanks
yea i would deff recommend a thin verm layer, Worked great for me on everything.
I have one cased with peat/verm but it was taking too long to colonize the casing so i just scraped the access back off and im gnna fruit it soon. Casing is just a bunch of extra bull when it comes to cubes IMO.
But a verm layer (like when you dunk and roll ur cakes) Does Wonders... i would deff recommend it. other-wise you end up waiting on pins for an extra week
