Yoga and my knee joints..
    #14083945 - 03/07/11 09:50 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

ok so i just started practicing yoga at a local studio a couple weeks ago, i've probably taken about 9 classes so far..

just this past friday i took a bikram class in the morning, my 4th class of that week. well after the class i started to experience fairly uncomfortable pain in the joint of my right knee. i kind of figured that while doing some of the one legged poses i was actually resting my entire body weight on my joint instead of flexing my leg muscles and using them to support me. i think this happened because my leg muscles were completely worn out and i was pushing myself just a little too hard any not paying enough attention to my body.

i've had an ankle issue for awhile now (scar tissue built up around left ankle joint) and my walking has been off, and as a result my full leg muscles don't really get exercised when i walk. but yoga has realy helped to build them back up a little, and i've made huge improvements in my ability to walk.. i was thinking that maybe i'm just doing too much too fast and i might need to take it slower and give myself more rest inbetween sessions to give my muscles the proper amount of time to recover?

well i rested saturday and sunday and just had another bikram class earlier today. this time i made sure to focus on my muscles when doing the one-legged poses and i think i did better.. i had to stretch on the ground for part of the class. but now afterwards, my knee joints are still aching quite a bit.

does anyone have any ideas as to what might help my situation? getting more rest maybe..?

i'm also a recovering alcoholic and admittedly have some cognitive issues.. i feel i really severed my mind-body connection.. i could just be overthinking this entire thing, but i'm worried about my body and any bad pains are making me freak out

much thanks for any wisdom anyone is able to share!

ok so i just read this at http://www.wikihealth.com/Knee_injuries_and_yoga ...

Be careful of hyperextending your knees. It is easy to hyperextend the knees in yoga. When parts of the body and hip joints are tight, it is often easier to get deeper into postures through locking the knees. Some types of yoga, such a Bikram yoga, stress 'locking the knees' in certain postures. Knees should never ever be locked in any postures in yoga. It is important to distinguish between the difference in pulling up on your knee caps (this is ok) and between locking the knees (not ok.) If you hyperextend, keep the knees slightly bent in most standing and forward folding poses.

now i'm confused. you are never supposed to lock your knees in bikram? let's say i stand up straight on one leg and my knee is slightly bent. am i actually supposed to extend it even more to lock it in place in some of these poses? or is that bad..? it seems like it would be but i don't know, that's what my instructors have been telling me to do it seems like..

could my knees just look like i'm not standing up straight to them when in reality i am, thus i end up hyperextending when following their advice? i'm confused.. thanks for any advice

sorry i'm like flooding my own thread..

ok so look at http://www.yogiclogic.com/bikram-yoga-poses.php

for example, in Tuladandasana - Balancing Stick Pose, the man does appear to have his knee locked as he balances himself on one leg..

so in my case, is it likely that my leg muscles just aren't strong enough to accomplish this yet thus putting to much pressure on my kneecap/joint, or am i doing wrong like hyperextending?

any thoughts greatly appreciated.. i have a beginners class tomorrow so i'll be sure to grill the staff beforehand, i'm just a little worried about teh knees

I practice some kung fu and yoga with my buddy whos studied with various masters for years and years

The two points he stresses most often is spine and knee awareness. 99.9% of the time, the knee should be posed to take the least amount of resistance when you are performing yoga. However, you are just as likely to injure your knees turning corners, bending over, and climbing stairs than in yoga class.

He really taught me how to re establish my posture through my knees and back.  I have torn ligaments in both knees and after 6 years I am finally seeing some progress, and this started only when I rebuilt my posture and relearned to walk. Since then yoga has opened up for me 100 fold.

If your knees are hurting in class, stop the pose and re figure your body to meet YOUR needs, not the teacher.

just some ideas:psychsplit:

thanks for the reply man, and interesting story... glad you've healed and relearned to walk  gives me hope

i kind of figured the way they had me doing it was hurting me.. i'm still not exactly sure what they were thinking, or if it was just miscommunication or what, i guess i might find out tomorrow..

so what exactly did you do to rebuild your posture and relearn how to walk?

At my studio they always say to not lock out the knees "microbend" they say.

--------------------
"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

I have been practicing varieties of the basic wing chun stance. These are based on uniting the upper and lower body by proper thigh, knees ankles and spine placement. Some focusing primarily on lower or upper strength. They may seem to be very basic at first, but they seem to becomes increasingly complex the more it is practiced. In the beginning you may only be able to do just a couple minutes, and over time you learn to hold it for much longer.

This has strengthened my back and knees and has taken my yoga to a whole new level, also the more I do these standing practices, or meditations, the more I can prevent unconsciously hurting my knees and back from simple tasks like getting out of the car.

If your interested, maybe look into kung fu, specifically wing chun siu lim tao, practice turning drills also. This will help you to understand the relationship with your knees.
