So, you shouldn't use a microwave to sterilize cakes in a jar, as opposed to boiling? (Sorry to reopen old thread, but I was actually going to post something pretty similar, so just thought this might be better)

If your gonna do cakes either steam in a boiling pot of water or pressure cook them.

I know that this thread is 675 days old but I must add to the information in here that... At standard pressure, water boils at 212 degrees F (Or 100 Celsius). Above 212, water becomes steam- and may be MUCH hotter than 212. But boiling water will never be hotter than 212. Having said that your sterilization should be done elevated out of the water. which is not logical in a microwave.

Nah, the steam won't rise above 212F either without increasing the pressure and that can only be done with a PC.

microwave lc's with nothing more than 600ml tap water and <10ml karo corn syrup in the microwave for 5 minutes twice works awesome too!
a veteran grower dissed on a MW a long time ago being cool and now dissing the microwave is the cool thing to do!
i am absolutely sure i can duplicate this again! also.. keep in mind i went from spore to spore here using nothing more than a damn microwave!!
it depends what your doing.. but it works if done to the right things the right way obviously in my experience!
MICROWAVE FTW!!

"It is not true that water can only get up to 212 degrees and as cold as 32 degrees. After water changes from a liquid to a gas (at 212 degrees Fahrenheit) it can actually heat up much hotter than that. In the gas form, water molecules are spread out and have a lot of room to move and get much hotter than the other two phases (liquid and ice). And water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. But it can actually get colder than that, all the way toward what we call absolute zero. This value is equivalent to about -459 degrees Fahrenheit. This is when the water molecules are basically not moving."

in fact, steam can be up to 700'F hotter than boiling water!!
the issue i found was more of a problem was the fact that if you heat something for too long it dries out! if you get it just right something can be sterilized to a degree that myc can grow on it! in my case it didn't take long for the lc to colonize my small cake which allowed for full colonization in the short window before any contams germinated..

First of all there is no such thing as a casing substrate.
There is a casing layer, then there is a bulk substrate.
Yes that is wrong, microwave ovens do not sterilize.

i don't know about the casing layer being microwaved... but sterilization in microwaves AGAIN! has been PROVEN!
http://news.ufl.edu/2007/01/22/zap-the-bugs/
its not exactly as dependable as a pressure cooker, however it does work! i have prepared brown rice spawn, lc's, and sterilized syringes successfully MANY MANY times in the MICROWAVE! THAAAAAA MIIIIICCRROOOWAAAVE!!
AGAIN check out one of my microwave experiments!!

RogerRabbit said: I find it odd that only dumb stoners appear understand the difference between a cooked loaf of bread having the mold spores on its surface whacked, and wet grains with bacteria and/or bacterial endospores throughout the entire jar(where microwaves don't penetrate). It's two separate things. Mold spores are killed by temperature far below boiling. Bacteria needs 20 minutes at or above 100C, and you can't heat water above 100C in an unsealed vessel.
Naysayers have not held microwave sterilization back. Repeated failures and the laws of physics have. RR

This is why we still have autoclaves beside the microwave oven (which has many other uses) in every microbiology lab. The best reason is that to really kill everything you need to heat the stuff around 120°C for 15 to 20 minutes. And even though some of the toughest spores may survive (rare, but a pain when it happens and you have to throw away liters of culture medium ). In the other hand your microwave will never heat anything over 100°C. Plus you may damage your microwave if there isn't enough water or anything to absorb the microwaves inside the oven. Definitely not a good thing to do.

This thread has been closed.
Reason: This thread needs to die a horrible death before it steers even more noobs the wrong way. The members who boldly post ridiculous nonsense due to a total lack of basic 5th grade science education around here is embarrassing, quite frankly.
