Rare record rains in Central Australia desert brings mushrooms

Flourishing fungi
March 8, 2011 - abc.net.au
By Emma Sleath

First there were wildflowers, now there are fungi. The Central Australian 'desert' is fast becoming home to a wide variety of 'shrooms' as our wet and humid conditions continue. Just one days exploring has unearthed this fabulous collection...

http://www.abc.net.au/local/photos/2011/03/08/3157853.htm

If you keep your eyes peeled during this wet week you may spot a few uncommon sights around town.

Not normally seen in arid environments, our record rains and humid conditions are providing the perfect conditions for a variety of very odd looking fungi.

"These things only pop up in any prolific amount every 25 years," says local botanist Peter Latz.

"It's only really now that they're becoming very common because we've just had this beautiful soaking rain for nearly a year."

One very visible fungus to look out for is the bracket fungus which grows on rotting wood.

A bright red or orange colour, this fungus was used by Aboriginals for babies with teething problems, says Peter.

"They'd get the baby to chew on it when it was dry...and interestingly the substance you buy in the chemist shop has got the same chemicals in it."

"Aren't they characters!" says fellow botanical guru, Des Nelson when shown the little crops of toadstools growing out the front of the ABC studios.

Des has also got a few out at his rural block, and he's keeping his eyes peeled for some edible ones.

"There's a great variety of them when you start looking for them...ones called earthstars, which are quite attractive little things - they do look like a star with a little bulb in the middle of them."

"Then there's the big puff balls, and the long slender ones which also produce brown spores, clouds of them when you touch them."

"I've seen a glowing fungus on the bark of mulgas in the night...and actually run my fingers across this stuff and got the glow on my fingers."

Wow.

Have YOU seen any around lately?

Let me know where or upload a photograph if you have the time - let's see how many we can document while they last!

I live in centeral NSW... Nowhere near the desert unfortunatly.

Our weather's been really differnt this summer, hence the odd findings.

We're meant to be about 2 months off..

I thought the strange weather would start our season a little early but nothing yet around where i live!

hope we have some outback members with some pictures of the glow in the dark ones!

I think I found some earth stars today.  Though I live in California, we to have had late rain following a dry period.

Could 2) be a Coprinellus sp? Hello! What's that in the lower left?

It must be a real treat for them in the desert. I can't imagine waiting 25 years between flushes.

Or something related, yeah. Funny how the little guy on the lower left looks like a small cube with the flakey universal veil remnants on the cap.

I went to Charleville in the outback. That was the dryest hottest place I have ever been. haha The weather must be crazy inorder for fungus to live there!
