Pepper germination
    #14083367 - 03/07/11 08:00 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I am having a very hard time germinating my peppers. I have a variety from small chillies to bell peppers and none of them have germinated in the past 2 weeks since I planted them indoors.

I don't know what to do to get them started.

Started mine indoors a couple weeks ago.  Used a heating pad to give them some heat and most of them came up within a week.  Those were jalapeños, red, green and yellow bell peppers, and sweet peppers.  What are they planted in?

Peat pellets. Maybe it's been to cold for them to get started. My poppies shot right up in under 24 hours. Peppers are lagging behind though.

It's usually around 50 degrees where they are at.

Hmm I used coco to start them, probably around 60 degrees plus the added heat from the bottom.  I had them in a little terrarium too so the humidity would stay high and they wouldn't dry out.

I always have a hard time with poppies but peppers have never given me trouble.

Keep the soil moist with a light spraying daily, mine took around 1.5 weeks to sprout, and all of the others followed within a few days.

Yes, they need to be warmer, and also I don't think the seed has a long life so if they are older they will take longer to germinate, or won't at all.

I found success in putting starter mix in egg cartons and placing those in a deep (2") baking pan then just making sure there's 1/2" of water in the pan. Let it dry before refilling it. I got my tobacco seeds to germinate this way and forgot I had a Dorset naga seed inter which randomly came up after about a month and a half. They do need to be warmer tho.

I challenge you to challenge yourself more! When you feel complacent and ready to hang it up, challenge yourself to get over it! If you fail, don't look at it as you didn't succeed, look at it as you would a rock face you're trying to climb. Stand back, wayyyy back, and look at it and plot another path. If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

My one piece of advice would be to cover the seedlings with saran wrap. Poke some holes in it, and it'll keep the humidity and warmth up while offering some air. You probably already do this, but just in case you don't, here it is. The egg carton is great way to do it as well, you can drop cut-out egg carton pieces into a tupperware and germinate that way. I'm growing my first peppers and tomatos this year. Hope they start popping up for ya!

In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.
