How long can you keep a 100% inoculated mixture in a jar? PF-tek
    #14064967 - 03/04/11 07:36 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Please refer to my thread here, nobody is answering my question: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13862876

I have a couple jars that just 100% inoculated on the outside and bottom a couple of days ago. I know they still wont fruit for a week or so even if I put them in fruiting conditions. I still have 4 jars that are a week or so away from 100% inoculation. How long can I keep the 100% inoculated mixtures in the jars, still being able to take them out and dunk, roll and fruit them? Will they start fruiting in the jar?

EDIT: Some are not even 100% colonized and they already starting fruiting/pinning! Im dunking them now even though theyre not 100% done.

Put them in the Fridge for a week or so, They will stay in the fridge for at least a month.

Meh some days. Better of sticking the completed jars in the fridge until the others are completed.

Mk well second what the dude above me said.

Are you perhaps meaning to say 100% colonized?  Inoculation is when you first put your spores or culture on the grains.  You might want to review the nomenclature of mushroom cultivation.

Cool. You going to wait for the jars to finish, or birth them early?

Im goign to birth them early. Theyre above 90% colonized, but if they keep pinning its a waste of surface area because I wont get a shroom there. Got 4 of the 6 being dunked atm, tomorrow ill put them in my shotgun chamber and im sure I'll see some shrooms very quickly if theyre already pinning in the jar.

When you birth them wash away any uncolonized material under running water.

Next time use the right sized jars....You will see 98% less invitro pins and the whole jar will colonize....

You used the right "volume" but the WRONG sized jars....The short fat 1/2 pint jars are the correct size.  Alot of people make that mistake when they start off, its all good.....The taller 1/2 pints lead to a shitload of problems like the ones you have right now....

SHIT!! my 1st grow & I'm using the wrong size jars. I seen a video that kept saying 1/2 pint jars, but they looked like 1/4 pints to me. I asked the question as to why state 1/2 pint when they were 1/4 pint. I didn't know they made wide mouth 1/2 pints. Should I leave my tall 1/2 pints until they are fully colonized. I don't plan on dying anytime soon, so I should hve time to wait if it is worth the wait?

You probably watched RR's video.  I made the same mistake my first time.  I assure you that he has 1/2 pints in the video.  They appear like they are 1/4 pints to the novice grower but they aren't.  They are just short and fat.  If you already inoculated then just wait and watch.  Alot of the times the taller 1/2 pints work out fine....When I used them I got invitro pinning and some of the jars didn't colonize all the way.  Its just a pain in the ass to cut out uncolonized substrate and it can lead to contamination......but I got alot of fruits from them so no worries, just use the right ones next time.

Taller jars will compact the bottom of the substrate alot of times and deprive the bottom of gas exchange (GE).  It will lead to slower/stalled growth as the mycelium works its way to the bottom.  Another thing is that short and fat 1/2 pints will colonize more uniformly (is that a word?) so that by the time the bottom colonizes the middle will be too thus all finishing up at the same time...With tall and skinny jars the top of the jar will colonize quicker than the bottom.  So when the bottom is struggling/stalled, the top will actually dry up a bit and cause invitro pinning....

Its all the same surface area I dont see why it would matter. I had no problems with colonization at the bottom.

As I stated, taller jars do work alot of times but you will see a much HIGHER success rate with the right sized jars. Plus there is the fact that with the taller jars they don't colonize evenly, meaning the top shrinks up and dries as the bottom finishes colonizing ALOT of the time.  Makes for a messed up timing for dunking....and it completely messes up the consolidation period because you will have invitro pins much of the time at the top while the bottom still needs consolidation.....If you are fine with messed up timings with your flushes and cutting out uncolonized subs at a higher rate then knock yourself out...

Found 3 cases of wide mouth 1/2 pints today, but I can't pick them up til next Friday. That'l give my tall 1/2 pints time to do something. Had to go about 40 miles to find them but I found them and bought all they had.
Thanks
