so pissed

So I won an old AA PC on eBay. It arrived today - broken. There were maybe 3 sheets of newspaper for padding in the giant box. FedEx slamming it around resulted in at least one good impact on the pressure gauge, resulting in a crack in the lid at the base of the gauge where it threads into the lid. Assuming of course that it wasn't already broken to start with.
I really wanted to use it this weekend, and I REALLY hope I get a refund. I contacted the seller but haven't heard back yet. I can always dispute via Paypal, right? What are the chances that I'm totally screwed?
I should have just bought a new one from Amazon.
Any advice?

File a complaint with PayPal quick. They can only refund so much of the money especially if the seller empties out his PayPal account. (Speaking from experience.)
I'd also try to report to eBay so that the person cannot sell again. I'm not as familiar with this process though.
Good luck.

Well it looks like I should be covered by eBay's buyer protection, but I'm supposed to contact the seller and try to work it out before filing a dispute, which I have 45 days to do.
Do you think I should just try for the full refund (which would cost me $ in return shipping), or see if I can get a partial for what it would cost to buy a new lid? I think the lid is like $80 though and I only paid $120 for the damn PC, so I don't know if they'll go for it. Not sure what they're going to do with a broken PC if I return it though either.

What does it say on the fine print in the auction?
I mean, I'm not sure why you should pay for return shipping on an item that arrived broken. On ebay, I always try and work it out politely with the seller before going to dispute resolution.

Yea definitely get on paypal or ebay fast. They will typically make it all right pending you attempt fixing it with out them first. If your really worried about the shipping costs and such maybe file a claim with FedEx. Or just b*tch and moan to the seller and see if they'll do it with out involving a 3rd party.

There's really no fine print, I think that's just how it works. Maybe I'm wrong and I wouldn't have to pay return shipping. Will have to wait and see what the seller says first I guess.
Actually if I don't hear back by tomorrow morning I think I'm going to go ahead with the dispute.
