Smell of Penicillium vs. Trichoderma
    #14081304 - 03/07/11 02:04 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I just threw out a batch of contaminated grain jars (Golden Oyster) which had stalled at 80-90% colonization. The mycelium looked nice and white, but when I opened it, it had a very distinctive non-mushroomy but not garbagey smell. The colonized grains were bound together so tightly that clumps could not be completely broken up by banging against a bicycle tire.  Sorry, I don't have pics because I tossed it as quickly as I could. Are these enough clues to identify the contaminant? I'm thinking Green Mold or Blue-green Mold. But I don't have enough experience to tell them apart -- hence the smell question.

Well, in my expereince, if a jar is contammed with mold it will still smell FUNGUS-sy.  Maybe not mushroomy, but definately in the same ballpark.  (yes I Know I'm a moron for ever having sniffed a contammed jar)

Can you describe the smell of the jar in a bit more detail???

No. No, man. Shit, no man.  I believe you'd get your ass kicked sayin' somethin' like that man.

Hmm. If I describe the smell as "medicinal but strong and bad," that would perhaps bias things toward Penicillium. But there was still a good fresh mushroom scent underneath it.

BTW, I made two known errors when I prepared these. First, I incubated them at 75-80 degrees. Never again! RR, I have seen the light! I'm not gonna toss out my two plastic tub incubators, however, because I can lower the temp to 70 F for cold nights, and leave the top ajar for some fresh air.

My other mistake was keeping the foil on the jars after PCing. I missed the instructions about taking them off.

That sounds like bacteria.  Grains with mold will break apart easily, and smell like dirt from the garden.  There's many species of bacteria, not all of which stink like garbage.
