Grant Green - get his whole discography
Not "technically" jazz but Kermit does a lot of Jazz and this is a GREAT rendition of Skokiaan
Too often people forget about New Orleans jazz. Rebirth Brass Band keeps *lots* of tradition alive; and there's nothing like looking at or being in a second line:

No, but brilliant suggestions
I would add Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Louis Armstrong to the essential list

It's the best.
Edit: I see a lot of Miles in the thread...yeah, he's a pro but his jazz is arrogant, and fuck Kind of Blue and his old shit, yeah it was groundbreaking but it's dated now. There is better jazz out there. My favorite Miles albums are his psychedelic/fusion ones: Starting at 1969 In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, later Live-Evil was good, and then the epic Pangaea in 1975. Dave Holland was the bassist in MD's best period (IMO) the late 60's to 70s. There's a great torrent out of Dave Holland's music called "dave holland 6 albums" or similar. They are great 6 albums, but the best is by far his live album Extended Play, Live at Birdland. Get it.
Oh please. Miles was incredible and pretty much all of his vast library of albums still sound great. You can't seriously compare Bitches Brew to his other stuff anyway, its totally different music.
As far as modern stuff goes, I haven't seen Chris Potter mentioned yet. His Underground group is really hip and he plays with everyone.. including Dave Holland as mentioned above. Probably my favorite modern musician. For something older, I haven't seen Joe Henderson or Dexter Gordon listed yet.
