I'm going to try agar in 1/2 pints should I use the regular metal canning lids or the plastic ones?

Plastic lid has half as many pieces to handle.

You can use either. I use the metal ones with the rubber side down. I make up the agar and pour it into the jars then pc 15psi for 45 mins. If you have holes in the lids for inoculation I put micro tape over the holes then put tyvek over the lid and screw it on with the screw ring. Finally I place aluminum foil over the jar. I have also made lids with two hole and filled with silicone this seems to work the best. Then when I want a lc all I have to do is push some sterilized water into the jar pressurizing the inside then suck up the myc that was blasted off the agar when the stream of water hit it. Works slick and then the myc grows back. myc

here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13534468#13534468 professor pinhead had a good idea in using the metal bands and screwing them over a square piece of spawn bag instead of the lid so he could see the agar inside.. i like that idea alot

I like the metal ones rubber-up. But they're slipperier that way too. Plastic is my choice. I've stopped using holes, there's enough ge around the edge of the lid.
Jars are great on a small scale, but they are too bulky for long term use, or large scale. But they're great for getting started.

Shit. I was sterilizing my jars, heating the agar and pouring under sterile conditions. I'd rather pc the jars after agar is poured but I have no myco tape, and if i'm correct they will blow up if I pc jars with no holes in the lids?

No, that's fine. Don't tighten the lids all the way down.

It's small and shallow. Like 30 mins at pressure is probably all you need

The jars wont blow up. They are made for canning fruits and vegies. Yeah I agree with doc 30 mins should be fine. As doc said you can use the metal lids upside down but when I do agar I like to have them down. When I do grain I have the lids upside down. myc

Correct. One good thing about doing agar in half-pint wide mouthed jars is the fact that the agar is pre-poured into the container before sterilization allotting the agar as well as the container to be sterilized at once. Cutting out on the sterile agar pour procedure in front of a flowhood or inside of a still-air box into sterile petri dishes.
When using half-pint wide mouthed jars as agar containers, you can also safely inoculate the agar without a flowhood or still-air box using syringe inoculant by installing an injection port of sorts onto the lids. Never hurts to install a filtered gas exchange port as well.
