Time to upgrade to bags, have a few questions
    #14076742 - 03/06/11 05:33 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I've been cooking/cleaning/inoculating (and all the other trouble that comes with re-using jars) 80 qt jars a week for my reishi garden, and now I realize I should cut that down to 20 bags and save myself lots of work.  I've got 10 bags to experiment with and here's my plan...

Fill bags with 4 qt jars worth of spawn then seal bags.
Load bags inside a pillowcase to prevent melting then load in pc and cook for 2.5 hours at 15 psi
Inoculate bags and cover injection site with masking tape (this will be done in a still air glovebox with a history of less then 1% contamination rate) with 6 mL LC

I'm wondering what advice people have on loading the bags in the pc. Is it ok to lay the bags in with the top standing up so that the filter is above the water? Also, is it best to try and remove the air from the bags prior to sealing/cooking or should I leave lots of air or a little air??? Any advice you could give me on my cooking and loading technique would be great. Thanks ahead of time.

If you use the oven bags then you wont need the pillow case.  They won't melt.  They will be able to take up to 400F before they melt....Try to keep the bags off of the walls inside the PC (I try too, but even if they touch the sides I haven't seen any melting)....  Extra air isn't necessary.  Make sure you have a GE port obviously.....

and do the same thing with bags as jars, try to keep them above the water to achieve that extra steam temp you need....

I wasnt sure which one you  meant (the bags or the PC lol) but I've got filters on the bags and a good pressure release valve on the pc.

I meant GE for the bag when you colonize....
