P. tamp - upd. 4/17 - *complete*
    #1378539 - 03/15/03 01:49 PM (21 years, 19 days ago)

Back in June of 2002, three tampanensis jars were made from an isolate received from Anno.  One was millet and the other two were r.g.s.  The millet jar was fruited and did wonderfully making it to 5 or 6 flushes before contam'ing.

Anyway, the other 2 jars were kept in a room temp, 200 year old coal oven for sclerotia production.  They were just opened and harvested last week with not-so-great results.  I am guesstimating that together they yielded 5 g. dry.  I am fairly sure that the problem was too much moisture in the r.g.s.

So, the two jars were laid out in a pan, and are being kept at incubation temps in an attempt to fruit them.  Already the mycelium has recolonised the r.g.s. and is showing its pretty orange tint.  The tray was cased with pasteurised ~ 50/50 w/ a little lime and sprayed to field capacity with H2O2 +water.  The mycelium has begun to colonize the casing layer and will be cold shocked for a week or two.

I wonder if there will be much difference between the last tray which was laid out shortly after full colonisation and this tray, whose mycelium is nearly a year old.  Also the other tray was millet and this one rye grass seed.

I don't plan to see fruits for nearly a month, so hopefully I will be able to find a digi cam before then since dude doesn't have one anymore.  I asked him to do this since I recently gave away my last tamp print, and would love more for trading stock!

Wish dude luck.

Good idea

Is such a long cold shock required for the tampanensis too? I thought it was only needed for the ps. mexicana A.
Stamets book does not mention it, but he didn' write the whole book about tampanensis.

I last made some tampanensis clones on honey water, but it seems that some bacteria survived the h2o2

Anyway, I wish you good luck!

I haven't had too much experience with them. Last time they were cold shocked for nearly a month, mainly because there was no space in the fruiting chamber. I do get the feeling that so long is not required. I wouldn't be surprised if the age of the mycelia is another factor; it has probably been wanting to fruit for a while now. Maybe I'll tell dude to only c.s. it for a few days instead to see the results. It may even go into his fridge today, depending.

SWIM ran into some jars that did not do so well stoning too(6 mos. old).He put a 1 inch 50/50+ casing layer over the layed out substrate(12"*8"pan of r.g.s.3 "deep).2 mos.later he got ~250 shrooms off of the pan.He tried to print about 50 but not one made a discernible print on foil.He stripped the casing layer and found 50 grams fresh of small stones. He recased it and is in the middle of the casing run again. He thinks for multispore colonies,it's better to case and try for shrooms and stones.

was that from a multispore innoc?

Dude, had the same thing happen, and didn?t get any nice prints until at least the 3rd or 4th flush.  The prints he did get were pretty nice.  A few guys around here got some in trades

The last tray was an isolate, and also produced a bunch of stones in the casing.  Here?s a pic of it:

Dude went and put the tray in the fridge on the 17th and took it out on the 20th.  He put it right into the fruiting chamber.  This morning he saw the first sign of pinning.

He didn't allow the casing layer to colonise much of the 'peaks and valleys' before the cold shock; he did this in hopes of getting less but bigger fruits.  This technique works with cubies as well.  Another thing we will keep an eye on is the speed of growth.  Last tray, with literally hundreds of tiny mushrooms took almost two weeks to mature.  I have a feeling that these will not take as long.  I will elaborate if this turns out to be so.

I really wish I had a camera, dude was borrowing the one we were taking the pics with, but it is no longer available.  I am broke right now and dude is a bum, so there may not be any pics of this flush. :frown:

Lots and lots of pins!! The three day cold-shock was enough. The age of the mycelium/ substrate may also be a factor. Dude removed the tape from the fruiting chamber in order to lower humidity by a few percent. Let's see if it takes four flushes again before any printable fruits form.

I'm going to try to borrow a camera in the next few days.

As badly as you want to see some, I want to post some!  :frown: There are many mushrooms; at least 100 that are on average .25 in now.  More than I wanted to form, so it will probably be a few flushes (again) before any printable specimens form.  The speed of growth does seem to be a bit quicker this time.  I figure I have at the very least 3 or 4 days to find a camera before dude has to pick them.

Dude also has some nearly fully colonized wild P. mex and P. mex A on w.b.s. that he will attempt to fruit side by side.

90% chance that tomorrow late evening we will have pics!

Thanks MJ.

Now we have some pics:

And another angle:

These are from this morning. They are about 3 days old now, and will probably keep growing for ~ another week.

I will update tonight or tomorrow if dude takes any more pics.

Thanks guys! The last tray lasted like 6 (i think) flushes before getting green mold. Hopefully this one will do at least half as well...

Dude uses a cool mist (on 24-7) connected to a sterlite tub. The tub has 10 - 5/8" holes poked into it. 8 of the holes are covered until ~24 hours after the first pins appear, then all but 2 are uncovered. This gives ~95% humidity and ~88% respectively. He has been adding about 5mL bleach to 1 gallon H2O to his humidifier whenever he refills it. The temps are somewhere between 72 and 80.

It seems like the tamps like a bit more humidity than cubensis throughout flushing, but I'm not sure. Maybe on the second flush he will only uncover 5 or 6 holes in the tub.
