Add honey into Brown Rice Flour Cakes PF TEK
    #14076019 - 03/06/11 03:01 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I had read somewhere that I could add a t-spoon of honey when mixing my brown rice / verm / water to give the myc some additional nutes. Anyone ever try this?

gypsum salt? Is there a preference as to gypsum to buy and how much to use? Will it give a better yield?

You can get 80 pound bags of gypsum for $8 to $10 in most cities. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than ruining drywall.  I usually buy it by the ton, but last time I was in Spokane, WA and needed gypsum, I bought two 80 pound bags because it was raining and I didn't want to haul a bulk load in my truck and have it get wet.  They were $8 and some change each.

Leave honey out of substrates.  It's anti-fungal.

Nurseries and, at times, big box store gardening centers. Alternatively, if you can't find it ground and bagged, it can be found sold simply as "Gypsum drywall" on the cheap at just about any hardware store that sells drywall. Just be sure it's the "100% gypsum drywall", just drywall and brown paper backing. Bust a piece of, toss it in a pillow case and take out all the day's frustrations on it.
Use it at ~3-6%(i go with 5%) by volume in your substrate.

Why do they use honey for liquid cultures?
I've even seen the advice, not to be cheap, and to use honey (not sugar) because it will worth it.

I made 24 BRF jars and I put a small amount of honey in two of them. The two jars I did that to took literally twice as long as my other 22 cakes. I waited 6 days after they appeared to be fully colonized before I birthed them. When I took them out I found that they were spots on top that didnt colonize. I cut those spots off and crumbled the them into some coir/Verm sub and threw it in a Tupperware. It's been colonizing for a few days and looks like its doing ok. Long story short, don't use honey. Use gypsum or maybe even karo if you have to try something risky/ new. Just not honey.

@RR I knew it was anti-bacterial but I didn know it was anti-fungal. Thx for the info.

You don't need anything extra in BRF cakes. They are plenty nutritious.

If I had to guess RRs answer to this it would be don't LC use G2G.

I think he would say use agar tek then use LC to make sure your lc is clean then do g2g
the best methods incorporate alot of teks and methods to me.

I WOULD never EVER use ANYTHING drywall related for ANYTHING you are going to eat.  I work in an industry where I have regular work trips to local coal fired power plants.  One of the by-products of of the power plant is "Fly Ash".  ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_ash ).  The fly ash is exported in large containers and I can confirm that at least one local plant uses it as part of drywall (the drywall plant Im referencing is less than a mile from the powerhouse).  If you look at all the HORRIBLE things that are in fly ash, Id not even chance that "100%" gypsum drywall....Id be too afraid of the chance that they "mis labeled"....I am still unsure how its even legal to re-use fly ash in this aspect.  I have worked with people who have become extremely ill just being in close proximity.  Get a bag of gypsum.  Don't trust drywall.  Its a shame that "recycled" fly ash can be used to make "dry wall", but it by itself is generally accepted as a "Hazardous substance" due to the amount of arsenic and all the other heavy metals and carcinogens.  Always wear a mask if you are doing any drywall work.  Just my 2 cents.

RR has had fruits tested and the tests showed that impurities in the substrate do not show up in the fruits, so it's safe to put anything in your substrate and not have to worry about eating it.

Also another step to introduce contams. That being said I have yet to have a bad LC out of 4 I made but I think I'm done with them.
