Sweat lodge experiences
    #14075527 - 03/06/11 01:01 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I just had my first sweat lodge session. This sweat lodge was the traditional type. I was invited by a shaman I found at a native American trading post. I recently have had trouble determining a calling so I asked him about it. He told me to meet him there. I followed through and was given an unsettling answer. I believe my destiny has been revealed. I must be strong. I must let wakan tanka guide me. I believe the spirits wish me to practice the art of the medicine. I must accept this fate for to ignore it only makes things worse. Please share your expierences involving the sacred sweat lodge ceremony.

None. Why do you feel as though you have a fate, other than death, that you have no choice but to accept?

Of course I have a choice I could choose to ignore the calling and live a normal life. But to ignore the spirits calls can have dire setbacks. In other words consequences will never be the same.

When I took survival training in the Desert, Paiute indian style, at the end of several weeks we hiked up a canyon and built a sweat lodge on a tiny stream.  I was amazed at how different you feel physically from sweating for several hours.  Every time I got out of that little stream I felt like another layer of crud was out of my system. By midnight I felt like I was tripping. Fuck those were some good days. After that was over I found myself wandering alone in those deserts for the rest of that summer. One of the best years of my life. Maybe the best.

A normal life? Anything other than studying medicine is a normal life? What if you stumble upon something that interests you 1000 time more than medicine. Would that be the spirits changing their minds?

I've spent quite a bit of time in the sauna as they are very common here in scandinavia. We love the sauna here. This winter I got into ice swimming as well. After some time in the sauna you go into the cold water through a hole in the ice, then back to sauna, then into the water again, etc. When you're in the sauna after a swim you're so empty-headed, maybe because all the peripheral veins are expanded or something. Everything in the body is in motion. Feels great.

Don't mistake the early Paiutes with modern Paiutes.  Modern Indians are in worse shape then most of America overall.

From the standard of living and knowing the ways of their early culture before being conquered.

wakan tanka? if you don't mind me asking where was this sweat lodge generally? My friend invited me to one but I haven't gone to it yet, but it sounds like it may be somewhere by where yours was. I totally agree with letting it all happen naturally, people can attack you and your beliefs, but screw it you know how you feel about things and its more important to figure out how you really feel and incorporating that into your life than pandering to other people's opinions

yeah but only to certain people. Not all native americans would say "wakan tanka" so that limits it to certain areas, which was my point

personally I think that's the same thing, it just reminds me of the tibetan book of the dead where demons or angels are outward manifestations of your own mind. Kind of like jungian archetypes in dmt experiences or something, it is yourself, even if it is on such a deep subconscious level that you don't recognize it as such

Amen to that brother. This is Precisely  what I'm talking about. I have a hard time explaining how I know what I say. My heart tells me to follow this path. I was guided by the great spirit to the ceremony I learned and saw things there I cannot describe. I just want to help people even at the expense of my own well being. And as far as this life being normal I can literally feel the difference and the break away from the loops and routines we go through often without question of why we do things the way we do. I see many people go down the exact same street going to the exact same coffee shop every morning. This is the normal life that I once had but I can literally feel it slipping away from me.
