1) straight to coir
Yes, but coir/verm/gypsum would be better.
2) in a shotgun
Sure, you can put blocks in there or line the bottom four inches with a bag and convert it to a hybrid MSG tub.

Leave out coffee. Gypsum is optional, but you can find it at local garden shops.

concerning the msg tub, what is the point of the tape(or paint) on bottom 4 1/2 inches? Also why do you put the ccv on a plastic bag?

side pinning...i've recently tried both methods(taping the tub bottom and the plastic bag in seperate tubs. with the duct tape i got alot of side pinning and that was hard to get to. on the other hand i did the trashbag and the trashbag sticks to the sub as it shrinks, which just eliminates the side pinning...i say trashbag is win

yea as the sub loses moisture it begins to shrink and that opens up an airway around the whole side of the substrate i get alot of pins that pop up in there and it just sucks pickin em

Why do you advise people not to use coffee when it provides a great boost?

my thought process...coffee added to h/poo or with worm castings works better because they have microbes that are naturally contam resistant..where as coir alone is resistant..coffee contams easy..if i pasteurize coir and leave it out...it does not contam,,but leave out some coffee,it will mold..now pasteurized correct ..should be fine..i know lots of folks use it

Who says it provides "a great boost"? Boost of what exactly?

IME, contamination. But some say nitrogen.

Disregard those who say not to use coffee. If properly pasteurized with the bulk substrate, it will provide a very nice boost. RR

Yeah, I recently tried the MSG with taped sides....Not too happy with the sub pulling off the sides a little bit....Definately expecting side pinning. But I will do my best to minimize it by keeping the top of the substrate moist.....

RR gets a boost out of it. But you're no Roger Rabbit.
Anybody asking for recipes needs to be told the best options and why. Coffee = green for newbs. Try it if you feel like proving me right.
Why include an ingredient known to cause trouble for many users? For a chance at 10% more mushrooms? You're doing it wrong if that's an issue. Fine tuning the performance of your substrate can happen later.

Im not saying im RR. He says one thing you another. You asked me who said that and i responded. Im here to learn both sides of the story and am curious about your response. Im not here to bitch you off if thats what you think, lets get that straight.
So as far as i read the argument is that's its more contaminant prone. I've seen users like patlal achieve greater colonization times with using coffee in spawn. Have have seen it used in good canopy grows. I ponder about its use since i have ample supply.

I read a while back someone stating that gypsum and coffee are like mycelium steriods. Can't think of who it is now. I typically soak my grain in a water coffee gypsum mixture. It seems to speed colonization of the grain. If you are going to sterilize your sub then put it into your FC it should be fine but if you pasturize and use a shot gun it might be a gamble. Try to do two one with and one with out and write up a tek.
