need quick monotub advice have pic.
    #14074786 - 03/06/11 09:31 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

when i spawned i did not layer or do frosting layer i just mixed the whole shabang in a spawn bag, dumped and spread even, its been two days and i have colonized grains chillin on the surface of my sub. i was wanting to know if i could take a sterile utensile "i have a long one" a lightly mince down these colonized grains a little below the sub surface i just dont want to end up with contams its about a 1:4 1:5 spawn rate.

well, after you break up the grain, it can take 24 hours to recover and start growing again.

do you have those holes covered up with tape? for the spawn run, you need to have the monotub holes covered and lid closed until the substrate is fully colonized..

dont stick anything in there.. it will grow, as long as your substrate isnt too wet or anything..

what Im saying, is you need NO FAE during this perioud..

it has nothing to do with RH at this point either.. if they are getting FAE from those holes, then it will not continue to colonize like it should..

so, debates aside, I have to assume that you stuffed in polyfil with no tape, and since its not really colonizing, you should probably tape them up until it is, then untape and introduce fruiting conditions..

if you stuff the holes tightly with polyfill you don't have fresh air exchange but gas exchange Yosha. Even without the tape.

Close it up, put it away. Don't look at it, touch it, breathe on it or shed skin cells near it.

dude sweet.. you are the first person to call me Yosha, and not DJ.. even though I dont mind.. lol..

im just saying, maybe he doesnt have it stuffed tight enough, and I have to imagine that tape WOULD help.. because if they arent tight enough, then maybe that is the issue..

just troubleshooting here, guy..

i keep thing in my closet fae is very limited right here I want proper GE for sub bro that has as much to do in value of colonizing a gas build up. im a non taper dude sorry, RH has to do with at what level my sub drys if it was low then yes i would need to substitute tape for one of those poly holes i also have the lid sealed with tape.

As everyone else has mentioned just leave it alone.  Plus you spawn ratio is pretty low, so it may take a while to see some colonization on the top.  :imo:

Lol :tongue2:

Someone not to long ago compared it this way, which i myself find a quite valid comparison. You don't tape you're colonizing jars closed just as much as you don't tape the monotub during colonization. The difference as far as i can see is that if you tape the holes up colonization will go slower but will have a better grip on the substrate (and perhaps better flushes) and only polyfil will speed up colonization but the mycelium will have a weaker grip on the sub. So perhaps a combination of the 2 would be best. Don't know. Am in the middle of testing it out really. 1 tub at a time.

yeah, dude.. i know what GE is.. dont get butthurt..

i dont care if your not a taper.. cool.. dont tape.. lol.. it doesnt matter to me.. it was a suggestion.. advice.. thats why you posted, correct

"RH has to do with at what level my sub drys if it was low then yes i would need to substitute tape for one of those poly holes i also have the lid sealed with tape"

your substrate WILL NOT dry out if its prepped right, and you have NO FAE during your spawn run.. so, you should have nothing to worry about, right? since your tub is getting no FAE..

if you said you didnt everything right, since you know what you are doing, then why are you worrying about it? leave it be, and let it do its thing..

lol.. asking advice is NEVER a waste of time.. its the questions that are not asked that waste time

adding the spawn layer on top totally does help.. if anything, just add more spawn in next time, if you think it will need to colonize quicker..
