Just some pics of my first experiments with mushrooms

Making grain
My inoculation was to grain, 3 quart jars of rye and 3 of WBS, both soaked 12H, simmered, drained and PC. WBS seem to have colonized a little faster. No contams, only mistake was not to drain the grains enough so when i shaked the jars at about 25% colonization a lot of grains got stuck at the sides of the jar over the rest od the grain.

Casing I then cased the grain directly to 60/40 verm/coir with some gymsum and calcium carbonate, about 1/4" case on the bottom and 1/2" at the top. I´ve seen people saying that casing rye and WBS directly doesn´t have much sense and that you get small shrooms. Next time i´ll try bulk but i didn´t want to add another process in which i could spoil everything

Patching
Think i didn´t level/equilibrate well the substrate, micelium is developing much more in some places than others so I decided to patch. By the way, how much time does pasteurized casing last in the fridge??? I used casing pasteurized 2 days before using it.

Pinning
Just took out the aluminium foil and put it in my just finished greenhouse with plenty air exchange and natural light (not direct sunlight but quite a lot of light in the room)

Fruiting
about 5 days after pinning started

about 6 days after pinning started. The mushrooms are not very big but i think they look healthy and beautiful. Tomorrow will start harvesting the ones that are ready.

Ah, some micelium started to grow at the base of the shrooms, imagine because of too much humidity.
By the way, this is my
Greenhouse

Coolmist running 24/7 (my city is a dessert, down to 35% RH) and ultrasonic 15 minutes every hour.
However i think i will change to RR´s setup: - The coolmist inside the greenhouse which will make it last longer (coolmists are so difficult to find in europe and for this one the shipping was 2.5 times the price of the coolmist) and as it rehumidifies the already humid air it will boost RH and i´ll have to put it on a timer so i will use lest electricity and have to refill less often the humidifier.
- The Ultrasonic Will be humidifying the room where the greenhouse is to rise RH to 50%. This will make easier to mantain humidity inside the greenhouse and also make the air in the room healthier for me
- Air Exchange: I´ll just make some holes in the top of the greenhouse in one side and on the bottom on the other and maybe leave part of the door open.
Other Experiments - 100% coffee ground substrate without sterilising or pasteurising for Pleurotus
I got a lot of coffee ground from a coffee shop that they carefully stored for me. The coffee grounds were pored into a bag which was kept closed. I got only coffee ground of that day and used them right away.

I think the "pasteurization" when the coffee passes throught the coffee machine is enough for the pleurotus (Eryngii by the way)
Grain to grain
Also tried grain to grain of king oysters, 1 jar to 5 in my simple glove box, i had 1 contam and 4 ok.

And some cakes
And some days ago i made some cakes with rice flour, verm, and a little gypsum, let´s see what happens, at the moment no micelium can be seen but has been about 3 days only.

Next step, today will be spawning some horse poo mixed with worm casts and a little gymsum (5%) and verm (10%) that i pasteurized last night and left cooling.
I hope you didn´t fall sleep with the post I´m so excited with my new hobby and wanted to share.
see you!!!

"Other Experiments - 100% coffee ground substrate without sterilising or pasteurising for Pleurotus"
I like this experiment. I think I'm gonna try it with some yellow oysters.

I'll be watching, and its good to experiment and try different things, i'm curious about the worm casings, and coffee grounds, I have access to 50+ lbs. of used coffee grounds a day.

Thanks for the positive energy!!!!
KingMob and nuentoter, you should try it for sure. I´ve read in lots of places that oysters grow on 100% coffee without problems. however i imagine crops would increase with a more diverse substrate.
The think i like about it is not having to sterilize. I will keep you posted, at the moment some are 50% colonization.

Your 'casing' is less like a casing and more like a bulk substrate yo. For future reference casings are supposed to be non-nutritive, and coir is far from that, so by adding coir at the amt you did, and placing it under and over your grain you've essentially created a bulk substrate with one fat grain layer in the middle.
Regardless, lovely results dude. Salud!

Yes, i´m gonna try peat moss next time. didn´t know how it was traduced to spanish (im from spain). Now that i know the commercial name here of peat moss (turba rubia) i´ll try the 50/50 peat moss/verm
However, i passed the casings to fruiting when i just saw the mycelium appearing and i think there was no overlay.

yup yup..
pure vermiculite is a TRUE casing layer.. using peat or coir works, but is not a true casing layer..
coir or peat are added to casing layers, because they tell you when to mist, as they slightly change color when dry..
they also can harbor contams and easily overlay if not watched..
50/50 STILL WORKS THOUGH.. heeeeeella people use it with great success.. its just not definitive as a casing layer.. even though it gets the job done..
