Battlefield 3
    #14074253 - 03/06/11 04:25 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I thought I'd start a new thread, something a bit more ficial. So here goes, battlefield 3, mmm apparently going to drop around nov, or the end of this year. EA's own CEO is touting this to be the GAME OF THE YEAR, and to topple CoD's market share in the FPS genre. Based on what Frostbite has done in the past I have no doubt that the past three years of work gone into this game will amount to something fantastic. From what I know there will be two different engines, console/pc, but they will both use the new engine, which is said to use the systems themselves to maximum capacity, also said to use a new codebase that allows the graphics to be far more complex and defined aswell as more detailed gameplay all without requiring more resources. :boobs:

"The positive thing is that the new rendering technique allows us to do more complex calculations at no extra cost…That’s the magic. The game will look very good, even on 360."
-- Gustav Tilleby

We knew that people would think that this demo was running on PC, but the good thing is that it’s all based on streaming…I can promise you that the console versions will still look amazing because of the core technology. If you have a 360, we want to use that machine to the maximum.

Quote:

With all of the buzz on Battlefield 3 surrounding developer DICE’s brand new Frostbite 2 engine, and the stunning gameplay trailer that was recently released, some skeptical console owners may already be preparing themselves for somewhat of a disappointment. Visual fidelity and frame rates are truly mind-blowing, but almost always at their best on high-end gaming rigs, not home consoles. But Battlefield 3‘s Producer and Art Director are assuring fans that the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game will be equally impressive.
It’s common for a modern property’s gameplay to be shown running on a high-end PC to give the absolute best look at the engine, to the point where The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s developers made news just by revealing that their trailer was run on the Xbox 360.

Good news for consoles is becoming harder and harder to come by, as the potential of existing consoles seems to be tested to the breaking point with each passing month. Some might also view DICE developing Battlefield 3 specifically for their PC fan-base as a sign that console perfection isn’t a top priority.

Luckily, the developers are claiming that’s not the case. After showing off a brand new Battlefield 3 gameplay video at GDC, the game’s Art Director Gustav Tilleby explained that console owners will be benefiting from the team’s new engine as much as anyone. Tilleby explained that the Frostbite 2 engine isn’t just changing the overall look of a game, but how a system’s resources are used to their maximum potential.

I've been a fan of Frostbite since BadCo1, and the sequel lived up to its name, with superior graphics and carnage. I'm glad they are putting in the extra work to make duel engines, theres nothing worse then a studio being lazy and rushing out a game that is obviously meant to play on a console and tweaked a bit to make it work on a pc.

Asfar as I know, there will be 24 players in the console versions, I wouldnt' be surprised if when released it was more, but asfar as anyone knows it is 12v12, and 32v32 for pc. I wonder if the maps will be any bigger for 64 players, you'd almost think they would need to be otherwise it would just be ungoldy messy, haha and so easy to run about reviving piles of bodies. You can also go prone, laying on the ground sounds awesome, aswell as dragging wounded enemies to safety. 48 different vehicles including but not limited to harriers, tanks, boats etc.. Weapons will be customizable, I'm not exactly sure what that means, but I hope there are far more specs, and maybe more detailed custom options. The feel of each weapon is huge in badco, so hopefully they do more with that. Pistol grips, interchangeable 40mm grenades, regular smoke grenades, maybe some tear gas or something. Regardless, Im sure this game will not disappoint, I've never really been anticipated for a game, or bought into hype but I'm really excited for this game.

"'We knew we could do better stuff with audio, we needed a core streaming system for the whole game," said Bach. "Everything from animations to objects to textures to audio we can stream. If you look at the consoles today they still have the same amount of memory, so how do you make a denser experience with the same amount of memory? You need to be able to flush things in and out of that memory that you have. Frostbite 2 was more or less a necessity for us to be able to build Battlefield 3. If we didn't build the engine we couldn't build the game because then it would just be an iteration instead of a big step forward.'"

"So far DICE isn't showing off any gameplay footage of the multiplayer component, which is too bad. I really wanted to see jets streak across the sky and launch precision strikes against unsuspecting targets. But even without the spectacle of controllable vehicle sequences to gape at, the story mode still looks pretty good. The characters are in no way related to those in the Bad Company games. What you get in Battlefield 3 is a fresh start. It's set in 2014, and an early mission follows a squad of Marines as they charge through cramped, dangerous streets and take cover from sniper fire on rooftops. "It's based on a 'what if' scenario," said Bach. "We see the world as quite unstable. We see it as the shot in Sarajevo where a small event can create a butterfly effect to start a world war." Even though the mission was early in the game, it sounds as though the scale of the conflict shown is going to ripple out into the rest of the world. "

dragging people to safety looks awesome! It almost looks like a hybrid between rainbox six vegas and badco2 on crack and lsd

its hard to say, could be just shitty computers they are playing on and how its recorded. My friend was picked to play the alpha trail it looked fucking sexy. More so then the graphics is the audio man which is friggen phenomenal. Seriously one of the best sounding experiences I've ever witness, better then some movies.

thx for the videos. a couple I hadn't seen yet. I also got the alpha invite from buying medal of honor 2010. Unfortunately I got the email at 1am the night before I left for a camping weekend. so sad. open beta should be soon and like MoH should last about 2-3 weeks. this game looks phenomenal.
