What's the most difficult thing about bulk growing/monotubs?

the most difficult is the waiting

it takes a bit to learn how to properly prep your grains, but once you do it a few times you get the hang of what works for you and then its easy..

agreed, the most difficult thing is preparing your grains, getting the moisture content right....and the fact that there are more steps for the process.....Other than that just follow directions and you will be fine.  I did grains with my first grow and was successful

The mushrooms, which grow only during the season of torrential rains, awaken the forces of creation and produce an experience of spiritual abundance, of an astonishing, inexhaustible constitution of forms that identifies them with fertility and makes them a mediation, a means of communion, of communication between man and the natural world of which they are the metaphysical flesh.

So getting the water content correct will be most difficult? I'm new to mushroom growing so any advice would be most appreciated.

I've watched RR's videos plenty of times. Very informational. I plan on buying the DVD here soon. And I'm using popcorn for the time being because it's so easy to get

thats what i usd my first time..its rather a pain in the ass to prep lol, i'd suggest trying wbs for your first attempt, much easier to prep, very cheap..I normally buy a 40 lb bag from tracker supply for like 9 bucks.

Do WBS the same way Roger Rabbit does rye in his video, only you don't soak or simmer as long because the grains are smaller.
Really you should start with rye. It's the easiest to get right, it's worth a bit of extra money.
Do rye.

The only reason I decided to work with popcorn is because it colonizes faster then other grains.

it also contams much easier, and is harder to prep and the performance is really poor compared to all other grains...

but if your set on popcorn use this tek:

if you decide to try wbs use this tek:

I didn't read all the comments but the most important thing in working with fungi is a completely sterile environment, which includes clean clothes, hepa arm covers and a hepa face mask. Take a shower before putting on the fresh and if possible, sealed clothes from when they were last cleaned.

More expensive techniques can be used for sterilizing, such as UV rays but they are dangerous to humans. A 10% bleach solution to water is extremely effective at sterilization. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when working with bleach. An alternative to a 10% bleach solution is 70% isophoric alcohol. According to new information here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/720285 They explain that 91% and 99% isophoric alcohol are more useful for flame sterilizing needles.

I recommend bags if you do not wish to follow the rules above. Not being clean is an awesome way to have bacteria and mold infections. Unless you got the magic touch, jars can be wasteful and costly in the beginning. A impulse sealer can be had here via google product search for the best prices globally I find; http://www.google.com/search?q=impulse+sealer&hl=en&tbs=shop%3A1&aq=f

Bags come from all over the place, but here is where they all come from to my knowledge; http://www.unicornbags.com/ The order for 1,000 units isn't too outrageous either. Some might disagree and say use jars, but that is a lot of jars if you are bad with contamination or have some kinda of love for bacteria =).

Also think of the bright side, any contaminates have a strong possibility of eventually mutating or evolving and learning to biodegrade the plastic. Even with fungi this is possible. Keep on growing fungi, I bet it solves the land fill problems =).

Good luck and sometimes you can find insane deals on eBay and Craigslist. Amazon.com is also an extremely useful site to find almost anything and the prices typically are spot on with Google Product searches.

Walmart, Wholesale stores are the best  general for supplies; lysol, tubs. You might have a strong local industry for the medical field and have those supplies local in your city; petri dishes, perhaps agar, medical instrumentation, etc. As the stores for supplies are tier for everything from large Corporations to smaller stores for small shops, it is somewhat difficult to find them.

Good luck with the grow, free horse manure from local farms is your best friend. Make sure to get fresh manure and soak it with water and air dry outside. Also be sure to read different teks on the different additives such as vermiculite, hydrated lime, coir, gypsum, straw and of course, horse manure.

Grain spawn varies, but most users recommend rye, wheet or wild bird seed. Organic Varieties preferred, but honestly just since the grains well and almost anything works. Organic just costs more money for just about everything. Also get this, growing the fungi in non organic grains allows the fungi to dissolve any perhaps toxic chemicals that may be present. Paul Staments even got Oyster Mushrooms to eat oil http://www.fungi.com/mycotech/petroleum_problem.html

The rapid adaptation of fungi's ability to drastically change allows nearly the fastest ability to morph; bacteria is the fastest organism to adapt. You might find a local 99.99% hepa filter in your area for cheap. I purchased one new, in the plastic 24"x48" with a fan assembly on the back for only $110. These are spectacular for working with fungi, and most users preference.

I'd recommend reading on here on multiple techs, and researching some of the material we've all posted here. Oh and sometimes the fungi change colors slightly, but if you smell the grain spain and if it smells sour it is infected with bacteria and must be thrown out.

Oh an my little tip is if you have a myco blender, be sure to sterilize water inside of it with the cap off or else the water will not be sterilized. The All Ammerican series sterilizers are awesome for mycology. You can pick up one used, even the ones 30+ years are good. I enjoy the sterilizers as they are electric and you can use a timer to turn them off after X hours. Be sure to initially set the heat source as it always varies with the amount of volume in the unit; water and jars / bags.

Bunch of bulk methods, but bags are pretty awesome for compost mixtures or grain spawn. Lots of people use a green house, which is plastic http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/ProductDisplay?mpe_id=12552&catalogId=10052&catalogId=10052&evtype=CpgnClick&intv_id=14003&division=FarmTek&langId=-1&partNumber=e055ab41_102445&storeId=10001&ddkey=ClickInfo
Modified with a cool mist and or an ultrasonic humidifier. It helps to have airflow in green house so recommendations for cutting some holes in it are awesome, but even better is sealing those holes with microspore tape; which acts as a air filter for contaminates. Even better would be a UV light in the water of the humidifier to sterilize the water before entering the greenhouse. One can customize a humidifier by purchasing a raw unit http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=spectaular&btnG=Google+Search#hl=en&sugexp=ldymls&pq=fogger+unit+aeroponics&xhr=t&q=fogger+aeroponics&cp=22&qe=Zm9nZ2VyICBhZXJvcG9uaWNz&qesig=P8QozSbFhmlWwQtpZxMXRQ&pkc=AFgZ2tm9LhnJu-9c_Q0-_5Ame4kjehLF6szm6j0_O_kUCWwCHCmXuchK3YW0cOlLqyb0Skxdtiuj56xvO3Qc3DBEGz2i5R9lhQ&bs=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbs=shop:1&source=og&sa=N&tab=wf&bav=on.2,or.&fp=387b75afb8f8752 using a bucket, with tubing.

Ironically the same fogger units can be used in Aeroponics, the best way to grow plants indoors. That is about all I know about mushrooms, hope it helps you. Agar is pretty unnecessary unless going with wild specimens or doing research / isolation work of fungi from spore prints. But it is quite fun to work with an integrate into your work flow.

some good info there, but alot are completely not needed

especially a UV light to sterilize the water before being pumped into a green house...thats completely un needed.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with the most basic feedback.
Do not use popcorn. Use rye.

Popcorn is not faster.
It's not better.
It's not cheaper.
It's not more available.
Use rye.
