Hunting in Michigan.
    #14073399 - 03/05/11 10:57 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Well I am probably going to break some rules by posting this and I hope the Mods grant me some mercy.

With that said let me get started with my post.

I am not a mushroom hunter. I would love to get into it right now but there is a lot of snow here at the moment.
I am looking for Panaeolus cinctulus. I would like to find some here in Michigan this year.
So I am asking for some help in locating some this year.

Reason being I was inspired by Allen Rockefeller.
I received a P. Frisco print, Not from him but someone else.
And was looking at it and playing with it. Put a small bit
on Agar just to look at its Mycelium.
(obviously I cannot grow it now or here its Michigan with 20 feet of snow...)
And I was like a kid in a candy store. with this print.

But all and all. I would like to go out there. Get some wild prints of my own
I looked at all the species in my area and the one I was attracted to was Pan. cinct.
And being in the geographical area they grow I would like to try my hand with them.

So this is why I am asking for a little help in information.

Where are good places to look?
What time of the year would be best to find them?
when should I look for them? i.e. after a good rain? or 2 or 3 days after? or what?

If I attain some wild prints I will be happy to share with anyone interested who helps me here. if your interested.

Thanks you

-SB

Edit:

P.S. What a cool looking mushroom. I like the ring on the cap very pretty looking active if you ask me.

Yes it sure does.  I don't really care but maybe some other mod will lock it.

Piles of horse manure and newly installed lawns.

When it warms up a little.

Look every day until you find them.

I start finding them whenever the temperature outside stays consistently warm and we've been getting plenty of good rain.  Alan is right about where to look.  Make sure you take a spore print for any you do find and confirm that they are JET black and not brown (which would indicate Panaeolina foenisecii, an inactive look-a-like).

Good luck and be sure to post your finds on here for the experts to have a look at before you go putting anything in your mouth.

So really anytime throughout the year when it is warmer, they fruit year around.

Horse poo. what about cow poo?
(So I can start scouting fields now)

I will always post my finds here first. I read the picture taking guide and will make sure I get that right.

I am not really wanting to eat them. More so I am finding this fun for the "hunt" and taking prints rather than eating... eating may come as a side effect tho... (pun intended)

cool so I asked my first questions. thats always a good start for me.

Thanks for the replies.

newly planted lawns as well huh? hmmm going to keep that in mind as well.

So when it is warmer. in horse pastures or newly planted lawns. and of course I will be taking prints of what i find. but make sure they are jet black prints. and post here with my findings...

Okay then I will be getting moving this summer wish me luck!

if you live in the woods i recomend looking for Psilocybe caerulipes a.k.a bluefoots.
i hear they are rare but i think they are more common than people think. i found some not 5 minutes walk behind my house by a patch of beech trees..
and you'll know when you find em because they stain blue as a bitch!

good luck:mushroom2:

Thanks for the tip
I wonder if they are usually found around beech trees...
I know of a good patch of breech trees in my area.

Thanks!!!

they start fruiting in june and end around late novemberish.
im pretty sure they will grow on any kind of hardwood. maple, beech, ironwood etc.
but it seems that they prefer beech
remember these are small mushies and very easy to overlook
Happy Huntin:thumbup:

Thanks.  Looking every day until you find them and then quitting would be lame indeed.

Thanks for the great info. Its nice to have another hobby for the summer besides fishing.
I love hunting for deer pheasant turkey and rabbit. but you can only do that in the winter.
Now I have summer hunting activity. I am sure this will give me a good look out for winter deer hides as well.
