Does cannabis have to be put away like food, in bear-proof boxes provided in national parks like Yosemite? Would keeping some pot in your tent invite animals?

Watch out for Smokey the Bear. They don't call him Smokey for nothing

It couldn't hurt. I don't really know, however. May as well.

This.
You even have to put stuff like sunscreen, DEET, etc. away. Which I never really got... I'm pretty sure the bear'd be conditioned to never raid camp again if we just leave some nasty lotion out.

Would it really make a difference if you smoked a bowl before going into your tent at night? Is there that much difference between having a joint in your tent and your clothes smelling like weed as far as animals go?

I wouldn't stress about smoking before going into your tent. Just put your shit in the bear can when you're done. But yes, I'd say that weed smells a lot stronger than a little bit of smoke clinging to your clothes.

That's sounds pretty reasonable. I'll go with that. Looking forward to Yosemite in the spring.

A buddy and I went on a few week long hikes on the AT a few years back.
I would always burn some herb in the tent at night and never really had a problem.
Surely my dank-ass self smelled worse than some burn plant material?

I live, hike and camp in bear country. I've never found them to be attracted to the smell of weed. Besides, you're taking a dog along aren't you? My dogs will tree any bear that comes within a half mile mile of us. RR
