QUESTION 2: How important are they, compared to recreational trips?

Rarely, equal, absolutely.
If I had to make an estimate, I'd say that 1% of my trips have turned out bad. I didn't really learn any more or less from them than I did from good trips, though. Tripping is always an interesting experience.
There are people who have good trips their whole life and more power to them, though. It makes me so hard when people act like you have to have your ass kicked by a psychedelic to ever "get" what they're really about. What if you get psychedelics so well they never feel like kicking your ass? Hmm?

Occasionally, equal, absolutely.
That is a great point.

What is the second question asking?
Oops, I see you answered that already. I thought it was another user asking if that's what you meant.

1. Dosage 2. Set and setting 3. Plan and prepare 4. Be in a good mental mindset before the trip
Moderate these and it'll help you avoid a bad trip.

Voted: 1. Occasionally 2. Slightly 3. A little bit
I've never really liked this whole "you learn more from a bad trip durp durp" philosophy. I think you can learn equally as much or little from any experience in life.
Tripping is something we all do to have a great time, and if we don't have a great time than I consider that to be mission failed. The trip didn't work out, too bad - but I'm not going to pretend like "Oh it's FINE because I learned sooo much".
That's always seemed like a massive cop out to me. On par with saying "sure my father molested me a lot when I was young, BUT IT'S ALL GOOD I LEARNED SO MUCH!!.... ". When something bad happens IT'S BAD, don't dress it up.
Now for the "do you grow from them" question, I voted "a little bit". This is because in every bad trip I've ever had ALL I did was want it to stop. Nothing else. No introspection. No appreciation. Nothing. Just fear, terror and a desire to feel well again. Do I grow from that? of course, I may be a little bit more accepting of future terror BUT in all honestly I really didn't get anything psychedelic worthy from the trip. I think that's a MAJOR contrast to a good trip, in which I feel like I have gained qualities, and appreciations of the universe and my own mind that I didn't have before.

I get some negativity every time I trip. Sometimes more than others, of course. They're all great, though!

rarely, and yes i learn from them.
i wouldn't say it was a bad trip, but i had some difficulty last night with my first mxe experience at one point (thread in trip reports if you want the tldr version). it wasn't a freak out, just my mind pulling some b/s on me. i talked it out with a friend when i was able to talk, moved on and had a good rest of the morning, and pondered it all day today. i think my ego had a little nugget of truth in what it was trying to tell me, but it was drastically overblown due to anxiety from it being my first experience with mxe and taking a pull off some am 2201 (not a smoker).
you just have to know how to compartmentalize when bad feelings or fear comes up on psychedelics. listen to your inner voice but don't let it dominate you, or you'll just end up being miserable. i think one of my biggest growing experiences was from my ayahuasca session when i was brought to a level of fear that i simply have not experienced in my waking life, ever, and i've had to fight for my life before. it stuck with me for months and there are aspects of it that are still...mysterious...to me, but i took it for the lesson that it was, and i kept my lid on when everything was going down at that.
chances are, if you're having bad trips on the reg, you either have some emotional issues or aren't doing right for yourself in life, or both. at least from my experience that's how that kinda goes.

Out of the 20 or so times I've tripped on mushrooms, I've only had 2 "bad" trips. I really don't call them bad trips though. In fact, I think referring to these incredible mind blowing experience as "bad" would be shameful and disrespectful to the mushrooms. Instead I prefer to call them Hard trips. To me, it's all about how difficult it is to deal with the experience.
If you're having an easy trip, such as tripping with good friends on a warm sunny day and everyone's laughing and smiling and having a good time, there's really not a whole lot you have to deal with.
On the other hand, having a hard trip where you feel like you've died/gone insane and your never coming back and you can't tell anyone what's happening because you've lost the ability to speak, that's a struggle unlike anything I've ever experienced during my normal life.
The last trip I had was by far the HARDEST trip I've ever had. I seriously thought that I had died. No logical explanation for it; one minute I'm sitting on the couch alive, the next minute I'm sitting on the couch dead. I can't go into everything that happened that night but I went DEEP inside myself and felt things I've never felt before. The night bounced back and forth between traumatic, euphoric, traumatic and back to euphoric again. I feel like I learned so much about myself that night - so much more so than on my easy trips. Since then I've been making a lot of positive changes in my life. I'm truly grateful for the experience and I appreciate it so much (my fellow trip buddies have a hard time understanding why I appreciate this trip so much).
