outdoor fruits are pretty?
    #14070852 - 03/05/11 01:02 PM (13 years, 8 hours ago)

Howz'it  fellers!?

I recently had a Pink Buffalo monotub contaminate with trichoderma from high humidity (standing condensation droplets) and stale air .. so I retired the substrate to the back yard under some banana trees.  Some beautiful 'outdoor' fruits usually occur ...  this time; not so much.

We've had a few days of rainy weather and colder nighttime temperatures (62 F).

These fruits went well past their 'prime' and were drenched in a number of downpours and show a lot of bruising ... and are really not too pretty.

Next tub I got the FAE happening earlier.  When my tubs are finished colonizing, they are covered with water droplets and if I don't get a bunch of air flowing to dry out the droplets, they'll get 'green'.

This next tub did better.  an average or slightly better than average MS pinset for me.

I pulled some of the polyfill and a few of the fruits stuck their heads out the hole for more air.  One fruit got too much air and started to dry and crack.  Here's a pic for those who wonder about this cracking cap thing:

These monotubs are outside and there is TRICHODERMA everywhere ... but they aren't contaminated by it if I provide proper air flow (actually the wind provides it).  When the substrate lingers too long in wet, stale air conditions, bad things happen.

My advice:  When you have a colonized substrate, don't be concerned with sterility.  Be concerned with fresh air.

Be safe. Have fun.

great flicks man. yea the 2nd run was def more of a success. i love how theyre popping out of the polyfil whole, thats sick. ive always wanted to do a bulk grow and step it up from cakes, hopefully i get some prized babies like yer stash there. glad to see u didnt chuck yer stuff when it turned green. ive always planted mine in the backyard and it seems to correct itself sometimes. i love outdoor grows actually. fuck i wish i could turn my whole bkyard into a shroom forest!

Can I quote you on that.

I have used spawn that stank and I was sure was going to go green. It had a shit load of bacteria.

Its almost like with adequate air flow the mycelium just eats the bacteria right up with its digestive enzymes.

Good Job for noticing Dude!

Yikes ! Prof. P.H.,

Quoting me makes me nervous.

I may have over stated the advice a bit ... but .. I see all these guys being obsessed with 'hermetically sealed', 'sterile' tubs .. and I've found that a good supply of fresh air is what works for me.

One day made a big difference in that tub.

some are over, some are just right and some are under. Harvest time.

For me it practically immunizes the tubs from trich,.

Like you said you can grow them on your back deck with a plug unplugged.

But if you duct tape the sucker up and stick it in a bag it is just asking for green,.

We know so much more about this shit today than the pioneers who came before us.

It is amazing! The yield is crazy!

that second pic you posted it looks like the stems are a little on the thin side

how big of holes do you have in your monotub? they look a bit small to me and your mushies may get even bigger if you can increase your fae

Hey Lipa K.,

love the psychotic Ren avatar.

ar1es,

the Pink Buffalo are a standard Thai style cube .. not huge, heavy blue'rs:

I harvested about half (maybe a bit over half the tub) ..

some of the bluing is almost black.  makes me smile.

I don't want to irritate anyone who doesn't equate bluing with potency .... I don't know the answer myself, although I lean toward the : bluing = potency :  camp.

Happy.  let the rest of the tub grow up.

also to ar1es,

those holes are 1".  I have tried diameters from 2" to 1" ... I think 1 1/4" are my favorite ... I ran those 1" holes without polyfill.  I am growing outdoors and trying to utilize the breeze and doing things a little differently than the guy in a closet with a fan. (I was that guy once !)

thanks.

edit. spelling

update: 20 hrs. later

the freshly harvested fruits dried to this:

103 grams ... so, a little over 3 1/2 ozs.

and the remaining fruits are ready to be harvested ... should be another couple of ounces .. so that tub's first flush yield will be 5 to 6 ozs.  ..not too shabby for a MS monotub.

I feel the same way... just ordered a PC from ebay so I'm about to embark on the monotub journey!  Good to know that fresh air is where it's at to keep the contams at bay.  Nice post uncle_rico!  Thanks for sharing!  :bow2:
