And then you can do it at will. Once you've trained enough. Just like any other 'martial arts'.

If abstract thoughts are going to fuck you (somebody has pulled a knife on you, say), you drop them. Because you know how, and you've done it thousands of times before.

Practice it enough and you get to the "Illumination/Samadhi" experience, which has been written about endlessly. One of the consequences of the Samadhi experience, tho, is that you have to then integrate it into your everyday consciousness (in some fashion). It's a non-reversable experience.

The key lies in controlling and evening out the breath cycle. Exercising this amount of control over a normally autonomous nervous function allow you to "hack" into the "mental-space" where observer and observed no long have a distinction.

many meditation teachers say though you should let the breathing go on it's own instead of trying to control it.

Would you be better off with not thinking anything and having a silent mind all day?

Or is better to have thoughts?

Thoughts in mind can lead to confusion and delusion.

I'd say staying in a mind of unknowing and lack there of could be enlightening, so say the less the better.

You couldn't survive without thoughts...

As for which is better...I don't know how to answer.  I seem to have lost any sense of what is truly valuable and useful recently so I can't say for sure.

there is no significant gap between these statements, although I removed some background statements.

anyway, free association is natural,
the mental muscle to bind bits of a mental model together - pursuant to invention - is certainly enhanced by concentration such as that which meditation requires and develops.
the purpose of meditation however is healing,
invention and problem solving is what humans can do with their mental apparatus as a form of work.
work is not meditation, although meditation is like work.

good luck getting things sorted out

Well, I have had that experience both on and off drugs and I have to admit that if I could somehow stay in it 24hrs a day I could live that life with a smile.  At the moment I've not been willing to let go all the way and take that trip..which is leading to lots of panic attacks and stuff.  It really is like dying.
